Full HTML view by default

2002-02-25 Thread John Doe

I was wondering if it is possible to have html mail display
intact. Right now when ever I get an HTML e-mail, it doesnt
show the images, and I have to click in the side bar to get
my message to open after recieving a warning about viruses.
Now that all my mail is scanned before I get it, I would
like to have it display as the sender intended. Is this
possible?

Not all risky elements which can be conveyed through HTML email are
screened by antivirus scans. Code can be run on a user's machine, or
data transferred, through the use of various tags. Some are intended
uses, and some exploit vulnerabilities.

Unless you know what the risks are and know where you want to draw
your own line about what to tolerate, you might be in better shape by
having TB! show the HTML part of messages but not use an external
viewer to show images. Those preferences are set in
Options/Preferences/General (which is available only to accounts
having Administrator privileges if you have a multi-user setup).
Depending on your risk tolerance and the specific programs you have on
your computer, you might go up a notch by having an external viewer
show images but by disabling ActiveX. It's almost misleading to name
one or two ways to deal with the risk, though, because there are many,
e.g., disabling JavaScript; disabling paste-by-script; etc.

I get a fair amount of HTML mail, and I have my preferences set to
show the HTML part of messages but not to show the images in an
external viewer. When embedded images travel with the message, like
banners or other graphics, I get them. The only things I don't get
are web-based images, but I also don't get the web-bugs and other
unwanted intruders. I suppose there could be web-based resources I'm
missing out on, including music and audio, but if it's coming to me in
the form of HTML email, it's almost certainly commercial and
unsolicited, and I don't want it.
