New year question

2001-01-02 Thread Alberto Almagioni

Someone in the Italian list ask if it's possible to have a "selective
reply-to" so that when you switch this function on you'll have a popup
when you're replying a message with Form and Reply-to addresses
different: so when you want to reply a to a message sent, for
example in a mailing list you can choose to reply privately (From)
 or publicly (Reply-to)
 Is it possible?

Yes. When you're doing an ordinary reply (in some cases called as "Reply
to sender only") the MUA uses an original message Reply-To: or From:
headers to construct the resulting To: header. But if you'll use a
"Reply to All" command instead you'll get the following:

An original From: header --> Resulting To: header
An original Reply-To: header (if present) --> Resulting CC: header

Here comes a solution: just use Reply to All command instead of Reply
and clear the resulting CC:.

That is one way, and it certainly works.

The other is:

ctrl-F4 will reply to the FROM address (private mail)
F4 will reply to the REPLY-TO aaddress (list address)

Oki That's great. But they ask me if it's possible to have something
like a popup when you're replying a message where from and reply-to
are different.
The problem could be when you want to reply to some one in a mailing
list privately: if you don't pay attention (and when you receive and
reply a lot of message every day you don't pay to much attention) you
could send the private message to the Mailing List.
So if it's possible it could be great if you can set up a function
like "Popup for reply address when From and Reply-To are different" in
the account (or folder) properties. So if you dcan set up this
function only where and when you want.
Is it a possible wish?

It is. I voiced it myself a year or so ago. ;-)

So this is a one-year-later-from-some-one-else request!
Please include this feature in a next version: could be so useful!

Hmmm. This wish isn't bad at all - especially for beginners. But please
don't forget that UI shouldn't be complex and _overloaded_. The warning
window you have requested could be easily treated as some kind of "nag
screen" by power users and IT specialists.

Here comes the second idea. IMHO it will be better if one can assign
some attribute named "Mailing List" to a particular folder rather than
selecting/deselecting some checkbox - the requested feature is useful
primarily for the mailing lists but not to an ordinary mail exchange.

Right, that's why it must be possible to turn it off. A tickmark in
the Account Properties / Options wouldn't be overloading IMHO.

No, I also want to know if my reply to a normal mail goes somewhere
else than the From address. AAMOF, I don't want the window to pop up
on ML's, because that would mean every reply triggers the pop-up.

The default for the tickbox could be that no window pops up, so nobody
will be annoyed.

Ya that's right... when I told "it could be great if you can set up a function
like 'Popup for reply address when From and Reply-To are different' in
the account (or folder) properties" I mean if it is possible to put
a check box in account or folder properties.
