Doesn't TB behave as desired? What would you want it to do?

You mean, you are at the first message, press Cursor-Up, and then you are
taken to the last message in that folder?

I've never seen this happening here, just tried, and I can't find a setting
to change this behaviour either (which means nothing maybe I'm just too
blind). TB just stops at the first (or last) message and doesn't move
anywhere.

I'd prefer that it close the current message only, because there isn't
any previous message when you're positioned on the first message in
the folder.

An alternative would be to disable the previous-message button if
there are no previous messages.

Too often I find myself reading extremely old messages because TB has
rolled past the most recent message and gone back to the oldest
message without saying anything.

Most likely, even though I can't find it, but I can't reproduce your
described behaviour.

I can reproduce it. But only when I don't use the preview as I'm
always doing.
So just use the preview to read your mail.

You could enable the messagelist in the folderview, it will be more visible
then when it wraps.
