Create a group template and use %ABToHandle at the appropriate places.
Should work unless those contacts have personal AB templates or when
they're also placed in other groups with group templates. (I'm not
sure what will happen in those cases.)

Another option would be to use something like this in your account
templates:
Hi %ABToHandle="%ABToFirstName='%ToFName'",
That should insert the handle, unless there is no handle in the AB,
then it should insert the first name from the AB, unless there is no
first name in the AB and then it should insert the first name from the
To: header.
This won't do of course when you've also got handles for people you'd
rather not that they realize how you're thinking about them. ;-)

It seems to work here if I use %ABTOHandle in a template, so I am
guessing that somehow I am missing something in your question. Have

I had a similar request but could never get it to work. One of the
gurus here gave me the following work around. I don't know if this
is what you would like to do.

If I have an address set up for someone whose first name is Charles
but he goes by Chuck this will put Chuck in the e-mail instead of
Charles.

I created the following quick template called "Nickname"

%_To_NN="%SetPattRegexp='(?im)^aka:\s*(.*?)$'%RegExpMatch='%ABToMemo'"%-
%If:'%_To_NN'<>''%-
:'%_To_Name="%_To_NN"'%-
:'%_To_Name="%Capital(%ABToFirstName=^%ToFName^)"'%-
%_To_Name

I then include the following in the AB on the other tab

aka: Chuck

In my new message template I include

%QInclude="Nickname"

1) Address Book/Edit/Properties

2) In the template instead of the % macro, manually type in the
greeting. I have, for example, a relative whose e-mail address uses
his first name, but he goes by his middle name. So on my new, forward,
and reply templates that I customized for him, I typed in "Hello
Herb,"; so even though the e-mail address reads "Ross@" the greeting
comes out "Hello Herb".

Try it and see whether or not this works for you.

Not that I'm aware of.

That seems to be the only option, I think. Then again, when your lists
have logical names it's kind of evident which contacts you're
addressing.

Principally you are right. But you even get this when no handle is
defined, especially when deleting a nickname. TB! shouldn't deny
deleting handles.

It's actually a bug - a known one I might add. I hope it will go
sooner ...

You get that when someone already is entered in the address book with
that nickname. I believe the nicknames(handles) have to be unique. You
can have duplicate first and last names but you can't have more
than one nickname the same ( I think :). This can become a headache
when importing from a file or program that lets you have duplicate
nicknames. If you are importing make sure you don't bother to import
the nickname field or else change the names to be unique.

I'm a newbie so I could be wrong about all of the above.

This has been a long time annoyance, and I think some (including
myself) have sent this to RIT as a suggestion. You might want to send
it in as a feature request too - er, something. The developers seem to
be very busy people, but I'm assuming they actually read all of their
mail.

A work around is to use an address book handle for that contact.

Example:

First Name: Christian
Last Name: Stiller
Nick: chris
Address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then in the To field, just type chris and hit Tab. That way you don't
have to worry about case (there, at least).

This sounds like it'd be better suited for the Mass Mailing feature.

I could go along with that I suppose.
