Why not run your own SMTP server, as I do, such as Mercury/32 or Postcast
Server, and let it handle your SMTP requirements? It WILL inform you when
your mail has been sent, and NOT relayed, and my experience with both show
my mail is delivered from The_Bat! to the lists instantaneously.

I use neither in the relay mode but in the straight SMTP mode and neither
have failed me yet.
