I just recently set up an IMAP account with the smtp (outgoing) specified, and I forward the IMAP incoming to a POP3 account, and set up a filter to change the colo(u)r option for the mail from that account. So I read the mail via a pop3 account, and send mail via the IMAP smtp server. So far so good.
