Re[3]: Virus Scan msg on mail check - Exploit-MIME.gen.exe

2003-06-10 Thread Anna
I had the same thing happen recently, and it turned out to be
explorer.exe, a virus thingie that resides in the Windows Fonts
directory. You can read about it in the various online virus
files. AVG detected and healed two virus thingies that apparently
sprang from explorer.exe and were in my Win32 folder, but as near
as I can tell, the system recognizes it as a system file and so
opposes deletion. My guru had to go into command lines (I think
that's what you call it? The little black box where you use DOS
or something similar?), rename the file, and then delete it. I
also have the free AVG version and have been perfectly happy with
it until this happened. Now, we'll see how happy I continue to
be. :)

I agree with all you have said, but want to add also that, as a
recipient, seeing a sender's footer that s/he has scanned the message
or attachments and that they are virus-free is, to me, meaningless.
It's nothing I would rely on, whether I knew the sender or not.

Can I just ask - what surprises me in what you have said is that you
don't have a sheep dip server dealing with the mail first? That would
enable all virus loaded files to remain on that computer and only
notifications to be sent to the Postmaster.

AVP tough to configure ? LOL

Neither for AVP. AVP Monitor is configured on my system not to check
mails !

If you think so...

I'm familiar with it and my NAV 2002 has that within its definition.
