No is the one-word answer ;)

I have to agree to Alastair. I installed Outpost and tested it on
grc.com. It worked fine and gave 100% stealth, also the Ad-Blocker was
fine. However, after half an hour of using it, my whole internet
connection froze. I rebooted, but again after half an hour I was cut
off from internet. So I uninstalled it again (not that outpost it is
still a release candidate only).

Personally I use TinyFireWall (http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny).

P.S.: Sorry for the OT mail.

SOT: TB!-aware firewall

2002-01-01 Thread Alastair Scott

Just to note that the new Agnitum Outpost [Free] firewall* knows of
The Bat! - it has preset rules for it, as I found out to my surprise
when I first tried to retrieve email with the firewall installed.

(Quite what these preset rules _mean_ is to be determined; I've never
seen a firewall with so many options ...).

No is the one-word answer ;)

As it turns out, I removed it because it forgets all the settings
after restarting the machine, and turns out to be too complex for not
enough gain. So I didn't have the chance to do the Gibson tests, much
as I'd have liked to.

It guesses what an application is trying to do on first connection to
The Internet and applies rules from templates (either specific ones
such as The Bat! or generic ones such as browser). Unfortunately
it sometimes guesses wrongly and undoing the mistake is awkward ...

I noted that, for some reason, the TB! log file is shorter when
Outpost is installed, which suggests that a transparent proxy or
similar is making its presence felt (there are various ad filters
and other plugins). From bad experiences with such transparent proxies
before (specifically Panda AntiVirus) this is not a good thing.
