2001-07-31 Thread Jerry McRae

Hi,

I have not seen this addressed. Am I missing something obvious or
does every one else do it differently?

When I get time to view the mailing list's messages, I show it in the
'view thread by References' option so I can follow the threads. I
then double-click (or enter) on the first message to read it. I
then want to go to the REPLY message without going back to the list.
  ^up ^down just move chronologically.

Q: Is there a 'move to next/previous message IN THIS THREAD' keystroke
  or shortcut?

Thanks,
Jerry

When you hint Enter you open a new window, called Folder View, ain't you?
Set Threading by reference for this window too (in View menu) and yo
should be done.

Hi Jerry,

Ctrl + arrow right or left let me move within _unread_ messages. Alt + left
takes me to the previously read message.

Cheers

Re[2]: viewing threads

2001-07-31 Thread Jerry McRae

Hi Thomas,

Summary follows of what I learned about shortcut keys (including the Ctrl-],
which seemed to change its function).

on Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at 9:14:55 AM, Thomas F wrote these words:

JM Q: Is there a 'move to next/previous message IN THIS THREAD' keystroke
JM or shortcut?

TF crtl-] moves down the thread for me.
This used to work for me until I installed version 1.53. It was a very
convenient keystroke to use for browsing the new messages.

Peter Palmreuther also wrote:

Set Threading by reference for this window too (in View menu) and yo
should be done.
I had no idea that there was a separate setting for the view window!

David van Zuijlekom also wrote:
And maybe he should enable View|Messagelist.
I had not used this much, since I am usually only reading solitary
messages. This solves an annoyance I had with the View windows. Titles
of new messages show the addressee, so if I'm working on several, I can
easily find particular ones on the task bar/list. Messages I am viewing
only say the name of the folder, I.E. View Folder The Bat of Jerry.
If I have several messages displayed from the same folder, I cannot tell
which message is which by the frame title. The frame title makes sense
if one has the 'message list' option selected. (Although, it would be
nice to have some distinguishing information (sender?) in the title).

Peter Meyns also wrote:
Ctrl + arrow right or left let me move within _unread_ messages. Alt + left

On my version (1.53d, win98) the Ctrl left right arrows just move
between words. I DID find that the Ctrl up down now move backwards
and forwards through the thread or new messages... once I set the by
reference option. The Alt left right work for me as in a browser ...
moving back and forth through the history of viewed messages.

What else I learnt...

1. enter on the first message does not enable the Ctrl arrow keys for
browsing by thread.
2. hitting the hot key to browse the message in the
ticker always places me in the 'last' message, so only Ctrl-up gets the
next un-read message.
3. Using the 'by reference' and 'message list'
options in the View windows, THEN the Ctrl-] works to go to the next
message. If I don't show the message list, (or I TAB to the text) the
Ctrl-] doesn't work when viewing the message only. This DID work in
version 1.47. It was nice.

Thanks everyone,
 Jerry

Hi Eric,

following in regards to "Viewing threads":

Eric How do I make The Bat! automatically expand message threads?

I'm not sure you can actually do this. The closest thing I've
found is in the keyboard shortcut list. With your cursor in the
msg list, CTRL-* (numeric *) opens all threads.

Just changing your focus to a different folder closes them back
  up.

I know this is not exactly what you were asking for but it is the
closest I could find. Maybe a more experienced TB! user will have
  a better solution.
