Go to: http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm
and get some "false" virus files and test TheBat with and
without the AVG plugin and report the results back to the group.

I usually don't run AV programs in resident mode, because they
interfere with other things I need to do. Because of this, I find the
AVG plugin I'm using with TB! to be very useful.

No. It just doesn't understand other protocols.
If all e-mail traffic was the same Esset didn't need to update NOD32
from POP3 only to POP3/MAPI

Same here.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, plugins (to any software) just
increase the chances of things going wrong for very little (if any)
benefit.

They do ensure the survival of mailing lists, however ;-)

It quarantines bad mails into a quarantine folder within TB, while a
AV program without plugin will quarantine it ot a file outside of TB.
If you want to deal with infected mails in any way, you want to use
the plugin. I don't because I just want them deleted.

Which can cause trouble if it »protects« you from temporary files
TB! creates when receiving mails.

Think of encrypted email communication.

You may also be using POP3 but with encryption. Again, the usual POP3
scanners will not detect viruses over an ecrypted feed. The plugin
helps there.

That's just what I wanted to hear! :)
I'm very new to TB! and I was fearing that TB! might use 'something'
that passes by NOD32.

Problem solved. I would hate giving up this solid app.
But still I wonder why plugins are written. The coders must see an
advantage to it.

What's the use of an Anti virus plug-in?

2004-06-12 Thread Tony
Dear Batologist,

What use is an Anti Virus (AV) plug-in?
I think all decent AV tools sniff incoming/outgoing e-mail traffic
automatically.
So what benefit does a plug-in add?

I'm currently using NOD32; and I think there is a plugin for it.
