Very easy: If you check this TB! uses the original file and only at
sending will put together the complete mail.

If you uncheck it, TB! creates a copy of the file in your specified
directory.

Dierk, I'm not finding that I also lose the message if I just delete
the attachment by right clicking the attachment icon and choose
'delete. The whole problem is that there is nothing in the Help File
on this 'feature', and the syntax is misleading and confusing.

Can someone enlighten us on just what is meant by "Bind attachments
only while sending out mail"?

There was a mail where I wrote about it.

After testing and finding this problem it is set to:

  Store in separate directory
  Delete when Trash is emptied

Before (and what I'd like to do):

   Delete when Trash is emptied
   Bind attachments only while sending

Faster than I thought.

1. The original file gets deleted when binding while sending is
checked, *and* you want to remove the attachment! Always, regardless
what you set the other option to.

2. If you put the whole message into the Trash and it gets emptied you
will lose the file only, when you check both options.

This makes the bug much more vicious, since you can now lose important
files while you still compose an important message. And you may only
stumble upon the problem by coincidence, as I did.

It could be fixed very easy, I think, just don't allow TB! to delete
the original file when "Bind while sending" is checked - never!

The option to delete the attachment when Trash is emptied should only
apply when you use the special directory option!

No. The mail I found this bug with was one of the few important ones
to save. But I didn't need the attachment in it as I had it in my
directory concerning movie and TV scripts. So I just deleted the
attachment from the mail.

I just had a look in the Properties. You have the possibility to check
"Bind attachments while sending" *and* "Delete attachment when message
is deleted from Trash". They should definitely be mutually exclusive.
I will test during the afternoon if it changes anything to have the
last option checked or not.

Well, the best would be if TB! let's us bind attachments only at
sending (as it is now), but would *not* delete the actual file while
deleting the displayed link in the message.

Much better than to think for yourself "Oh, I don't have to - and
shouldn't at all costs - delete the file in the message, as it is not
there slowing down performance or grabbing disk space."

>> So, I'm back to TB!'s default and once in a while a little hand job.

Sorry, couldn't resist this little joke, especially since TB! had
chosen one of my favourite lines about German humour for the tag line.

I have enabled the "Bind attachments" option and have not had any
message deleted.

I tested it on my system this way:

1. Created a new outgoing message and attached a file.
2. Sent the message.
3. I went in to the Sent folder and deleted the message I sent
   previously with the attachment.
4. Went to the directory where I selected my attached file and it was
   still there.

Now, I did not select just the attachment icon and deleted that. I
just deleted the whole message.

Did I perform the same steps as you did to duplicate this bug?

Thanks!

I find TBs habit of accumulating copies of attached files really annoying
aswell, so I'd appreciate it handling atachments like other mail programs
(take Eudora for example).

Beware, beware! I did it like that for months till I noticed that
deleting the "attachment" from the mail - either by hand or through
automatic trashing - you *lose the actual file*.

It created a very embarrassing situation with a TV studio I sent a
treatment to and have to ask for a copy after realising that TB! had
deleted the original file.

So, I'm back to TB!'s default and once in a while a little hand job.

altering how the Bat! stores attachments?

2001-07-19 Thread Charlie Laidlaw

i looked in my attachments directory, and i see that if i've sent out
the same photo in several different posts, theBat! is storing another
copy each time, adding 1/2/3...

Is it possible to make it not store _any_ copies in the attachments
directory, but just use the photo in its original location (my photos
folder)?

Or is it possible to just stop this duplication, so if the same photo
is sent out in several posts, only one copy is stored?
