Re: spell checker - three usage questions / difficulties

2004-07-14 Thread Eric
Dear list,
Mile mentioned having

MeTB> American-style "-ize" endings on
MeTB> words instead of the British "-ise" ending.

Personally, I regard the -ize form as British. It's
certainly the suffix preferred by the Oxford English
Dictionary and the OUP.

spell checker - three usage questions / difficulties

2004-07-13 Thread Mike email (The Bat!)
Hi

I cannot work out a couple of things about using the spell checker.

Firstly, how do you abort the spell-check but still send the message. If I
press cancel, the spell-checking is cancelled but so is sending the
message. The only way round this I've found so far is menu Spell checker >
uncheck the option to "check before send/queue" and then press "send"
again. Surely I have missed something?

Secondly, pressing "add" when the spell-checker fails to recognise a word
has no effect. The word continues to be picked up as a possible mistake.
How do I make this work?

Thirdly, I have "British English" selected as my language but
spell-checker seems to suggest a mix of UK and US spellings. For example,
British "colour" not American "color". American-style "-ize" endings on
words instead of the British "-ise" ending. "Co-operative" with the
hyphen(UK-style) or without (US). Is this a feature of the dictionary used
and If so can I import a better third-party version? Or is it likely to be
something wrong with my setup? My spell-checker options are
  Automatic checking
  Check before send
  Language > 2. British English
  Options > case sensitive
typographical suggestions
auto-correct
moderately fast and accurate

   TIA for any help
