[TCP] where are you from, what do you do?

2007-11-06 Thread Lisa Gielczyk (TCP ADMIN)
Hi everybody,

Traffic to the TCP website and membership on the list have increased
dramatically in the last week or so. Could you let me know where you heard
about TCP? You're welcome to post your answer to the list, or you can write
to me offlist. If you post to the list, why don't you also let us know what
you do in your tech comm career?

Also, I'm working on converting the site to Drupal and adding new features,
like blog space. If anyone has worked with Drupal before and if you're
willing to advise me a bit, I would greatly appreciate it!

Warm regards,

Lisa Gielczyk

2007-11-06 Thread Eva Whitley
I heard about TCP from (cough) Techwr-L. There was some unpleasantness
there... (And I can't say I'm crazy about all the off-topic stuff, sorry.)

I used to edit documentation for Medicare/Medicaid. Now I edit
documentation for the Weather Service. I've also worked for companies
that weren't government contracts, but they weren't as fun. I am in
Maryland, so doing something non-governmental may not be possible.

2007-11-06 Thread Suzette Leeming
I heard about TCP from Techwr-L.

My career path went something like this:

   - Administrative Roles
   - Systems Trainer
   - Systems Analyst
   - National Product Support Specialist
   - Documentation Specialist
   - Technical Writer (over 10 years now)

I live in Keswick, Ontario (Canada) and work in Stouffville, Ontario. In my
previous job, I telecommuted 100% of the time, now I only telecommute 2 days
a week.

I document software applications, currently for a company that develops
applications for the financial industry (banks, trust companies, credit
unions, etc.). I have no formal education as a technical writer (although I
have taken one-off courses such as documenting for ISO 9000, etc.) and I
have learned so much from the techwriting community and lists such as this.
I will even be so bold as to say that I get more from lists like this, than
I do from the STC (of which I am now a senior member).

2007-11-06 Thread Melissa Nelson
I also heard about this list from Techwr-L.

I work for a NATO NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) Contractor in
Maryland. I write a little bit of everything, mainly User Guides and SVDs
(Software Version Descriptions) and Requirements docs. I also keep an Acronym
Dictionary and a company newsletter and Wiki.

In the past I have worked for a webhosting company and an electronic education
company. I have worked at my current position for two years and love it, mainly
because my commute went from 30 miles to one mile! :)

I find these lists to be a great source of help and guidance.

Re: [TCP] where are you from, what do you do?

2007-11-06 Thread Chris Vickery
I heard about TCP from the Tech-Wrl list also.

I'm the Technical Content Manager at an on-demand (SaaS) PLM (Product
Lifecycle Management) software company in Foster City, California (right
at the end of the San Mateo Bridge). We're a fairly small company, and
I'm the only writer. I write all of the user-facing documentation (about
15 documents). I do my document writing in XML--both Docbook and DITA. I
use the Syntext Serna XML editor to author, and am heavily dependent
upon a consultant to set up the technical side of things.

I'm hoping to single-source our DITA content to create a help system for
our application, probably transforming to an Eclipse Infocenter.

I am responsible for every word that appears in our application,
including terminology decisions, page tips, error messages, etc. We're
small enough that I'm a member of the Design team, and get to provide
input on new features and enhancements (we have new releases about three
times a year).

I've also become the project manager for translating our documents into
Chinese, and I fear I may soon become the localization manager as well.

Coffee. I need coffee.

Chris

Re: [TCP] where are you from, what do you do?

2007-11-06 Thread bphuettner

I've been on the list for a while, but don't post very often because someone
else usually comes up with terrific solutions to most questions that people ask.

I've been a technical writer for 22 years or so, currently working as a
contractor for a variety of clients.? I also run a couple of websites and write
commercial books - the most recent is "Managing Virtual Teams" with Kit Brown
and Char James-Tanny.? I'm an STC Fellow, an IEEE/PCS Senior Member, a UPA
member,? and often volunteer to sit on boards or committees for one group or
the other.? My paying work used to be mostly software and database-driven
products, but lately I've been doing a lot more hardware docs using DITA.

I have spoken at a number of conferences, both commercial and non-profit, and
have written articles for a bunch of different magazines and newsletters.?

[TCP] Upgrade Anger to Tech Comm Suite.

2007-11-06 Thread richard.melanson
I just got off the phone with Adobe and I don't feel good about the answer I
received. I purchased FrameMaker 8 seven or eight weeks ago. I got it pretty
quickly after it was released. I paid the full online price and I downloaded
the file from Adobe. Well, I just called and asked what could Adobe do for me
as I want to purchase the Tech Comm Suite. Their answer was NOTHING. Now we all
know that Adobe KNEW when I bought FrameMaker 8 that the Tech Comm suite was
coming out, why did they make me spend all my money. For almost the same price
as I purchased the FrameMaker 8 license, I could have purchased the entire
suite if I waited a few weeks. I do have one of the qualifying products to get
the upgrade price for the Tech Comm Suite. I just think this is bad business.
anyone else have this issue or on the other side of the coin, do you guys think
I am unrealistic to be upset. Thank you all for your thoughts.

NOTE: I can't recall about this list, but cross-posting (the same post to
multple addresses) is frowned on in various other places I hang.
Particularly since I'm not a member of those other lists and cannot post
