Re: [TCP] Documentum

2008-02-27 Thread Sue Heim
You don't use Framemaker WITH Documentum, per se You use Framemaker to
create the documents and then use Documentum to manage 'em within a
workflow.

So It depends on what you are doing with the content that is in Documentum.
If everyone within the workflow has Framemaker, and no one will ever need to
see the docs who doesn't, then yeah, you can use FM to create docs to be
managed by Documentum.

From my experience, people don't use Documentum as a version control program
but instead to manage workflow (create a doc, send it for review, edit a
doc, and so on). In this case, it's possibly not all stakeholders will have
access to Framemaker and therefore the workflow will break.

In the very large organization where I used Documentum, all documents that
were managed were Word or PDF.

It's looking like we're going to be implementing Documentum here, and I'd
like to know if FrameMaker is a good program to use with it. Do any of you
have experience with Documentum? If you do, what do you use with it (e.g.,
 FrameMaker, Word)?

 Thanks!

I once worked an interesting six months at a large medical devices
company reformatting Word documents to the company's style standards so
they would work within their Documentum system. Why, I don't know other
than the fact that the documents had been created by a dozen different
people and followed a dozen different formats. It paid well and they
said they were happy with my work, so we were all happy.

Re: [TCP] Documentum

2008-02-27 Thread John Posada
FM documents have some characteristics that are different than Word that add
a CMS twist. From a CMS perspective, FM documents resemble webs more than
documents. Each .fm file can have dependencies on graphics and text inserts
that are in lower directories. To integrate an FM file in a CMS systrem,
that CMS system must be able to recognize those dependancies and either
retrieve them with the document, or must adjust the cross reference on the
fly so when you open the file, you don't get empty anchors and broken
cross-reference links.

It's elements like this that may not matter to those interested in 10%
integration but do matter to those looking for 90% integration.
