[TCP] New Job No

2008-02-20 Thread technical writing plus
This article seems to be well-written and useful. It's on cnn.com and was on
CareerBuilder.com. It's 'Six signs your new job is lousy' and you can
see it at

http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/worklife/02/18/cb.lousy.job/index.html

By the way, the 3 highlights are [1] You may land in a mess if you leap into
a new job, [2] Sign of lousy job is that you get no training or orientation,
and [3] Every day, someone runs out of boss's office crying.

Re: [TCP] communications guidelines

Dr. Klaus Hofer, of CATi (Communications and Training International) in Nova
Scotia, has presented a workshop called Applied Psychology for Technical
Communicators for STC Wisconsin and a week from tomorrow he is going to
present this workshop in the Chicago area as well. His Web site is at
drklaushofer.com I believe, and it should be quite helpful.

By the way, more information about our workshops is on our Web site which is
at stc-chicago.org.

I'm researching effective communication practices to employ across my
organization. I have a few books I can pull off my bookshelf already
delivery tactics. As you can imagine, my focus is very wide, from
presentations and meetings down to email and IM. I'm not looking for
golden hammers or proverbs, but information I can dissect and reflect
back upon my findings as I dive into what the true issues that need
 addressing are.

There is an open source content management system called PostNuke
http://www.postnuke.com/ - although I do not know that it has the
functionality that you are looking for. It does do a lot of things.

Re: [TCP] copyright -- implicit or no?

2007-04-26 Thread technical writing plus
As I understand it, if your work is being done as 'work for hire' which is
what most work that is in the technical communication sphere is, then
copyright is held by the company or organization or whoever is paying for
the work. However, the individual creator does hold a kind of implicit
copyright on stuff that he or she creates until paid for it. This can be
important in a contractor relationship - ask Geoff Hart. He knows something
about this.

All creative work is covered by some kind of copyright and this copyright is
held by the creator of the particular item of work. Whether or not you add
the little c-circle symbol and name/year. But that little symbol does make
the legal protection stronger.

There is this place called 'Copyright Clearance Center' but as I understand
it, they collect fees for using materials that are used in an academic
setting.

-Original Message-
In general, copyright registration is a legal formality intended to
make a public record of the basic facts of a particular copyright.
However, registration is not a condition of copyright protection. Even
though registration is not a requirement for protection, the copyright
law provides several inducements or advantages to encourage copyright
owners to make registration.

Re: [TCP] Care to share a PowerPoint tip?

2007-03-15 Thread technical writing plus
Shift G-N when you're in Slideshow Mode calls up the Slide Navigator, but
the little pop-up has to be showing first. You get that to appear by moving
the cursor down to to lower left of the screen and hovering over the little
icon that appears.

The F5Esc thing is a toggle for going in and out of Slideshow Mode and when
you press Esc to exit it seems to cycle back to the beginning.

You want to stop the show for a bit and then resume it and I thought that
there used to be a specific command for that. Jim Jones

-Original Message-
So, I press Esc to drop off full screen, and alt-tab to the (dreaded)
live software demo I'm doing, I run the software demo, then alt-tab back
to PPT and press F5 to go full-screen and WHAM-O, I'm back at page one
of the presentation. What the heck? How do I stop that? How can I go
back full screen to the current page?..

To call up the Slide Show Help panel (Very useful) when you are in the
middle of a slide show, press Shift - ? in Powerpoint 2002.

It tells you about the Shift - B toggle that was discussed earlier. It also
tells you about the Shift - W toggle (which turns the screen white).

[TCP] question on how to disable a file's network transmission capability

2006-12-21 Thread technical writing plus
Hello, I have a question - is there a simple way to make it so that an MS
Word file (also, an OOo file) can be made to 'stay put' on a certain machine
so that the person who needs the file cannot (accidently or on purpose) send
it to another machine? Thanks.

Re: [TCP] Painful

2006-12-01 Thread technical writing plus
Someone else said to correct it with a red pen and use it in your office
anyway. I'd say that you go could that route or you could correct it in a
less obvious manner, if the mistake can be corrected so, and then you could
wait and see if anyone ever says anything. And then when someone does say
something, you can say what happened. So that calendar becomes a
conversation piece.

For example, perhaps you could stick on some little sticker (colored the
same as the background on the calendar) that you cut to the right size, over
the apostrophe in the first 'it's'. Or cut a larger piece to cover the words
and 'All It's Glory'. Not perfect but effective. Jim Jones

-Original Message-
It's Friday, December 1, and given my tendency towards structure
and order, I went to Borders last night to purchase a calendar so I
would have January 2007 in front of me (I keep two calendars up --
one with the current month and one for the upcoming month).

I bought a standard sized calendar and a couple of calendars for the
family members as Christmas presents. Then, there was this
beautiful calendar that caught my eye -- a large format (full-page, no
folds 18x24), mostly about the scenery with only a small calendar at
the top type of thing. It was pricy (for a calendar), but all photos
printed on quality paper suitable for framing, yada yada and at the
last minute I picked it up. It's perfect for a bare wall in my office.

So this morning, as I'm getting ready to walk out the door with my
new calendars in hand, I yell, I can't take this calendar to work! It
has a typo!

Fine Art Calendar 2007
Where the Perfect Light Embraces Nature and All It's Glory

It's Glory! It is Glory!

My husband responded from upstairs that it must be painful being
so anal...
