The tools should always be capable of submitting reports. When they
can't, it's a bug. There's no special work that needs to happen to
enable it.

Having reporting working is a reasonably high priority because the whole
point of having pre-releases is to catch bugs, and the point of
automated bug reporting tools is to make catching and reporting bugs
easier. Writing tools for that purpose and then not having them work in
pre-release phase would be quite a waste :)

Just in case David sees this, this should have been assigned to me as I agreed
to do the version bump to get the fix back in rawhide/F14. I changed the
assignee to myself.

[Test-Announce] Proven Testers: now working on Fedora 14

2010-07-30 Thread Adam Williamson
Hi, everyone. Just a heads-up to proven testers: now Fedora 14 has been
branched, the proven tester process is in effect for Fedora 14 packages.
Just like Fedora 13, critical path updates for Fedora 14 (even while
it's in development) will require +1 from a proven tester and +1 from
someone different. So, we really need proven testers to start testing
those F14 packages!

If you have a spare system you can run Fedora 14 on, or you can set up a
VM, or you're feeling particularly adventurous and you have a fallback
system in case F14 breaks your main system, please do go ahead and put
F14 on there. Installing F14 direct is currently a bit tricky, but what
you can do is install F13 live and then update to F14; you may have to
remove a couple of packages to make this work right now, soon it should
work without problems.

Then you can follow the proven tester procedure exactly as you would
with a released version - all the same repositories exist,
fedora-easy-karma will (should!) work, and the updates go through Bodhi.
Thanks a lot!

Right now we have one critpath update we want to get approved ASAP -
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/pygtk2-2.17.0-7.fc14 . I've
already filed a +1 on it, but it needs confirmation. There may be others
of which I'm not yet aware.

RE: Release criteria proposal: automated bug checking tools functionality

Why would we have to make it submit reports now? Unless the steps needed to
implement this are very few, there are plenty of other things that have a higher
priority right now, no?

Release criteria proposal: automated bug checking tools functionality

2010-07-30 Thread Adam Williamson
So, in the blocker meeting today we discussed having specific criteria
for the functionality of automated bug handling tools (currently, that
would be abrt and setroubleshoot, and I think KDE has its own tool
similar to abrt as well).

I'd like to propose the following two criteria:

* Automated bug handling tools intended to be present in each build
should be present and functional to the point of generating valid error
reports and storing them. (Alpha)

* Automated bug handling tools present in each build must be able to
generate valid bug reports and report them to the appropriate bug
tracking tool. (Beta)

I don't think we need Alpha to ship with reporting capabilities intact,
it's something we can fix post-Alpha release and not lose much, since
people will be able to submit stored reports once the bug is fixed. Or
is this again too complex and we should just go with the more stringent
requirement at Alpha stage?

Is there a big tracking this? Was it discussed on IRC only? I see
nothing in the PackageKit bodhi update or devel/testing lists mentioning
this until your e-mail, which is not very detailed.

I just ran today's updates with gnome-packagekit successfully. On one of
my home systems, where I do a majority of my QA time, I saw no issue and
reported positive karma. I only use gnome-packagekit on that system
specifically to catch any bugs.

Just a suggestion from a busy proventester. When using

Thanks. The process has run and is completed.

There may have been a slight timing difference because of the delays
with converting to git, etc. whereby some rawhide bugs did not move to
version '14'. If they were considered blockers, hopefully they were
labeled as such and thus we're still tracking them.
