RPC idmapd?

Anyone know why RPC idmapd would take around 30 seconds to start
when booting fedora 14 from scratch, yet starts instantly if I stop
then start the service after the system is up?

I saw this at one point, and the kernel folks found it to be a load
balancing thing gone awry in the kernel.

2.6.35.6-33.rc1 seems to include a patch:

- - Add sched-35-increment-cache_nice_tries-only-on-periodic-lb.patch,
another fix for excessive scheduler load balancing.

That should be in kernel-2.6.35.6-39.fc14, which is in dist-f14. My
load went down and the laptop (also an M1330) has cooled down a bit, but
it is still above one usually.

Fedora 14 under constant load

2010-10-14 Thread John Poelstra
Compared to Fedora 13 and Fedora 12, I'm noticing that on my Dell XPS
M1330 laptop, the system is under a load average of 1.0+ at all times...
even with no desktop applications open.

Naturally this makes it run hotter and shortens the battery life.

Are other people seeing this? How to diagnose further beyond 'top' or

attach it to a mail, bugzilla it, fpaste it, whatever - just make it
available somehow.

 Hi Mike,

I am using the Bodhi web interface right now to provide feedback on

The issue here isn't the identification of your adapter, don't fixate on
that. It's just the default mode selection, which has little to do with
the adapter and everything to do with the detection of the screen.

It might help to post your full Xorg.0.log in the broken case, not just

Adam,

Thanks for the suggestion, but no joy. I booted the Live CD to runlevel
3, logged in as root, scp'd the new driver from a neighbor system,
installed it using 'yum localinstall...', then ran init 5. The same
tearing distorts the screen even with the new 6.8.1-5 driver.

You said X drivers don't consider PCI revision, only vendor and device
ID. At http://www.pcidatabase.com/vendor_details.php?id=240 I find two
devices with Chip Number "Mobility M3 AGP":

0x4C45 Chip Description: Rage Mobility M3 AGP
0x4C46 Chip Number:Mobility M3 AGP
Chip Description: 0x4c46
Notes: DRIVER

In /usr/share/hwdata/pci.ids I found:

4c45 Rage Mobility M3 AGP
4c46 Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x
1002 0155 IBM Thinkpad A22p
1014 0155 IBM Thinkpad A22p
1028 00b1 Latitude C600

Do you suppose the aty128fb.ko kernel driver contains the correct
parameter info for one of the device numbers but not the other (e.g.
1002 but not 1014)? The display tearing problem I'm seeing goes back a
long time (prior to F7 for sure). Could we have been missing half a loaf
all this time?

James MacKenzie has experienced the same problem on his A22p. The only
solution I've found is the xorg.conf file I attached to my first msg.
Before I hacked that together I had to use the VESA driver, which is now
abominably slow.

A key number in my xorg.conf file is the hsync value found by the gtf
utility: 74.52 kHz. That's 501 Hz higher than the default value listed
in Xorg.0.log. The difference is blocking a 1600x1200 display.

Thanks for the feedback Gregory. We're still missing a few test results

Thanks for the feedback, but just a reminder that the release candidates
have not yet been built. A assume your results are against the 'test

Can you initiate the bug process so we can work the specifics of the
display problems? When in doubt ...

If you are doing a media-based non-network install (aka DVD or CD), you
need to tell the installer that you want networking enabled by default
on the installed system (see
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/14/html-single/Installation_Guide/index.html#sn-Netconfig-x86-edit).

If you are doing a network-based installation, networking is enabled by
default on the installed system.

That's not actually different. X drivers (with a bare handful of
exceptions, rage128 not among them) don't consider PCI revision when
driving a display, only vendor and device ID.

Try this driver build:

http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/packages/xorg-x11-drv-r128/6.8.1/5.fc15/

Download that on the live system, install it, and then log out of X and

RC1 Install Report.

2010-10-14 Thread Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX N2469R
I upgraded my office computer to a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
and Intel I5, 4 GB 1333 mHz ddr3.

The 64 bit install still goes to a blank screen with an ATI 5670.

I changed the display board to an Nvidia 9600GT because I
didn't like the ATI with Win 7. Incredibly, the default 64 bit
graphics install now goes to a blank screen.

I was able to install RC1 using the basic video option.
Installation with a manual disk layout was nominal.
The system>add/remove software now installs software.
Network manager still doesn't bother to start the network.

The basic video driver does not provide a menu choice
for 1080x1920 monitor resolution.

I like the new Kryptonite crystal artwork.

Re: F14 Installation report

2010-10-14 Thread Timothy Davis
Near perfect install of F14x86
Used the x86 install DVD (12 Oct, Anaconda 14.19)
Did not recognize my 8500GT and anaconda crashed, installed using
basic video drivers
Went faster than I had expected considering I added quite a few extra
packages, did not
add any additional repos during install but select all of the DEs
available. Upon reboot
video was still set to vesa, removed xorg.conf and edited grub to
remove nomodeset.
Firefox is still throwing selinux memory violation.

Like I said near-perfect.

I would like to become a proventester as part of my increased interest in
Fedora QA and therefore I'm not looking for a proventester mentor.

While QA in Fedora is important for my dayjob (where we run 300 Fedora
desktops for usage by university students) I also enjoy this kind of task
as part of my off-the-job Fedora contributions.

As a Fedora contributor I'm a package maintainer, an ambassador (though
not very active anymore), organizer of FAD Basel 2008 and FUDCon Zurich
2010. I also used to do some easy infrastructure tasks for a short while.

I've read and completely understood the instructions at [1] and will
follow the instructions t best knowledge, I know how to enable/use
updates-testing repositories, I know how to use the Bodhi web interface to
give feedback (still need to look at fedora-easy-karma) and I know how to
 report bugs.

I usually join #fedora-qa (nickname: red_alert) and I follow the test and
 test-announce mailing lists.

If you have any further questions or instructions kindly let me know.
Thank you for considering mentoring me in the proventester group.

Please will you go back to the original ticket entry in qa trac and
confirm the items as a reply rather than via this list. I will then be

Hi Andrew, it seems that you have already satisfied nearly all the
requirements for becoming a proventester by reading the relevant Wiki
page, enabling updates-testing and have been looking at Fedora Easy Karma
 - I will be happy to sponsor you provided you finally also confirm via
this ticket that you also know how to use the bodhi web interface for
feedback on packages that you test. Once that is done I will be happy to
sponsor you into the proventester group (and I note that you have already
 applied for group membership)

TC1.1 Live CD - ATI Rage Mobility chipset missing in R128 driver

2010-10-14 Thread Robert G. (Doc) Savage
I've just made and booted an i686 TC1.1 Live CD for my old 32-bit
Thinkpad A22p w/ATI video and 1600x1200 screen.

As I expected, the video display is torn into vertical stripes starting
about 2/3 of the way across (old problem). This can only be corrected
with a manually-created xorg.conf file (copy attached) on a
fully-installed system. Curiously, an Alt-PrtSc snapshot copied to
another system does not show the tears.

The only new thing I see that isn't working correctly is the screen
resolution. It boots up as an Unknown monitor at 1280x1024. There's no
system-config-display utility to change it to 1600x1200. lspci correctly
identifies my ATI video chipset:

[r...@localhost ~] lspci | grep ATI
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x
[rev 02]

Somehow that particular version has never been included in the R128
driver's list of chipsets. The closest match in /var/log/Xorg.0.log is:

ATI Rage 128 Mobility M3 LE (PCI), ATI Rage 128 Mobility M3 LF (AGP)

A few lines later in Xorg.0.log the LCD panel is correctly detected:
[ 318.256] (**) R128(0): Using flat planel for display
[   318.257] (II) R128(0): Primary Display == Type 2
[ 318.257] (II) R128(0): Panel size: 1600x1200
[ 318.257] (II) R128(0): Panel ID: LG.PHILIPS LP150U1-A2
[ 318.257] (II) R128(0): Panel Type: Color, Single, TFT
[ 318.257] (II) R128(0): Panel Interface: LVDS

Yet the desktop still comes up in 1280x1024, the highest resolution
available with System -> Preferences -> Monitors. It's being prevented
from using 1600x1200 by the default hsync:

[ 318.280] (II) R128(0): : Using hsync range of 31.50-74.01
kHz
...
[ 318.284] (II) R128(0): Not using default mode "1600x1200" (hsync out of
range)
...
[ 318.285] (II) R128(0): Not using default mode "1600x1200" (hsync out of
range)
...
[ 318.289] (**) R128(0): *Default mode "1280x1024": 162.0 MHz (scaled from
108.0 MHz), 60.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz

1026 1029 1074 +hsync +vsync (64.0 kHz)

How does one go about getting the R128 driver updated to include the "M3
AGP 2x [rev 02]" chipset?
