I think you've been asked during installation whether your account
should be an admin account or not. And it seems you agreed.

I would like to become a proventester. I'm working mainly on I18N related
packages in Fedora so I think I can help test packages in that area.

 I've read the documentation at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Proven_tester and understand it well. I
have been using bodhi for a year to submit updates.

The Design Suite has been promoted at SXSW and other conferences. We want
to make sure that the included applications are all working and in a good
state. Adam introduced package specific test cases at FUDCon in Tempe. We
should consider creating test cases for the most important tools, such as
 blender, gimp, inkscape and shotwell.

Illegible panel field.

2011-03-22 Thread Erik P. Olsen
The field in the upper panel that contains date and time has black background
and so is the text. When I move the mouse over the field the background changes
to white and the text becomes legible.

It's F15, fully upgraded and installed in VirtualBox.

Fedora and Gnome 3

2011-03-22 Thread Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX N2469R
The Monday 64 bit desktop, installed with basic video
driver -- Nvidia installed nominally. Gnome 3 it is.

If Gnome 3 works the way it seems to work, I need a
bigger screen. 28 inches of 1080x1920 is too small
to have everything visible at once instead of discrete
window panes. Maybe a 30 inch 1600x2500 will help.
Will Gnome 3 allow window panes to be shown on a
polyhedron, perhaps a octagonal prism 'ala V'ger?

I may be missing something, but I don't see why Gnome 3
couldn't be made to work with a plebian video driver.

Could we ask laptop users to report whether their backlight control works?
It affects some laptops using all of Intel i915, Radeon and nVidia cards,
and there's a patch series from Matthew Garrett that, while not ready for
merging yet, we might consider providing in a semi-blessed alternate
kernel repo, similar to what Ubuntu is doing.

I posted this to the test@ list:

Speaking of power management, there's a known problem with backlight
control on some laptops that require native backlight control, rather
than the standard ACPI interface.

Red Hat's own Matthew Garrett posted the patch series[1], but I've not
seen it applied in any publicly-available Git tree (do point me to one,
if anyone knows) apart from Canonical employee Kamal Mostafa's
linux-kamal-mjgbacklight[2]

Would it be possible, during the test day, to find out how many people
are affected by this (e.g. by adding backlight control to the list of
things to check)? If there are many out there -- including my Vaio Y --
we might want to consider providing a semi-blessed repo with a patched
kernel.

PS does mjg have a public kernel git tree? I could not find one.

No, it isn't - please don't spread that, it only confuses people.
Fallback mode uses gnome-panel and nautilus instead of gnome-shell. That
doesn't mean it's 'gnome 2'. It behaves quite differently from how GNOME
2 behaved and it's explicitly intended to behave as similarly as
possible to how Shell behaves.

I am guessing there is confusion over Gnome Fallback which is gnome2 based.

[Test-Announce] Power Management Test Day on Thursday (2011-03-24)

2011-03-22 Thread Adam Williamson
The Fedora 15 Test Day schedule continues to roll, and this week it's
the turn of power management:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-03-24

This event will concentrate on testing how well various common power
management operations work on a range of systems, and also on testing
the functionality of the new generation PowerTOP[1] utility.

As this Test Day aims to test out existing functionality on a range of
hardware, it's vital that we get as many testers as possible so we can
find as many bugs as we can! The testing is easy, quick and will be
possible entirely from a live CD - the Test Day team are currently
working on creating the live CD. QA and development team members will be
available all day to help you with testing and reporting your results.
Full instructions are available on the Wiki page, and we'll be in
#fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC[2] all day long.

Please do come along and help out on Thursday if you have a bit of spare
time! Thanks a lot.

Note ... the proposed updates are still in need of karma feedback. I
also just updated the boot.iso to include the latest fedora-logos
package. If you test with the provided boot.iso [1], or a nightly LIVE
image [2] with updates applied, please provide karma feedback to the
following updates:

Looks to me like you rebooted while the yum process was still going;
specifically, while gcc was being downgraded. So you got stuck with a
broken gcc. Just a guess, but that's what I would say happened.

A good one would be 'don't break rsyslog'. =) But really, this failure
doesn't worry me much. It's a pre-release, things break in pre-release
development. Our update testing system worked exactly as it's supposed
to: the broken update never made it into the release stream. AFAICS, all
QA goals were met here.

> it is possible to change/reconfigure systemd in such a way that a

Is it possible to change our initscripts such that this particular
failure has less of an impact? Probably. Is that a good change that we
ought to do? Possibly, possibly not; it looks like it'd have significant
consequences. It's something to talk to Bill and Lennart about, I'd say.
I'm not sure they follow this list, so either bring it up on devel list,
or in the bug report.

A broken link after brutal power-off?

2011-03-22 Thread Luigi Votta
Hi all,
today after the updates I get a blank screen and some missing icons as
already reported here by other people. So i decided to undo all this
update to the previous system snaphot (yum history undo #).
I've tried to reboot but the system hanged so I powered-off.

After that the system was unable to boot (Kernel panic it said relative
to a library (libgcc).

Rebooted with f14 and after investigation i found a broken link:
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 > libcc_s_4.6.0-20110321.so.1
instead of
/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 -> libgcc_s-4.6.0-20110318.so.1

So, probably the abrupt action was the cause of this ?!

Thank you in advance
Luigi

See https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/gnome-settings-daemon-2.91.92-1.fc15

Basically we need a gnome-desktop3-2.91.92 in updates-testing so gsd can start.

Change done in gsettings-desktop-schemas (uses now picture-uri) but not
in gnome-desktop3 and control center. Either downgrade the first one to
2.91.91 or wait till the other two are upgraded to 2.91.92. Or at least
that's what I think is the core of the problem.

This is not about any other service - this situation will not occur in
the case of for example httpd. It's about service that is considered
as essential for system boot, but in reality it is not essential.

What versions of the following components do you have (if you have
them installed)?

gnome-desktop3
control-center
gsettings-desktop-schemas
desktop-backgrounds-gnome

I suspect a change in how wallpaper is set between 2.91.91 and 2.91.92
of the first three which however has been propagated only to
gsettings-desktop-schemas so far in fedora.

blind committer?

2011-03-22 Thread Brian Millett
After the yum updates this am, gnome comes up as a dark screen with orca
speaking in the background. I'm not blind, nor have I ever enabled
orca.

In my .xsession-errors file there is

Gtk-ERROR **: GTK+ 2.x symbols detected. Using GTK+ 2.x and GTK+ 3 in
the same process is not supported
aborting...

GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.gnome.desktop.background' does
not contain a key named 'picture-filename'
aborting...

Am digging deeper to see what it is. Anyone have hints?

Thanks.

After taday having updated my system, I miss some icons in the

Thanks for the feedback Clyde! The bug you mention(682543) is still a
known failure and not intended to be resolved in this particular update.
IMO, it's appropriate to provide positive karma since you can now at
least hit that failure again.

blank screen but works...

2011-03-22 Thread Rob Healey
Good evening:

I would like to report that I am having a new problem for me at least!

I did a new install of F15-Alpha-Live x86_64 Gnome and once the install was
complete, I rebooted...

I get a black screen with the gnome shell panel bars. I can get into my
activities/ windows screen, but it is completely black as well! I can get
into the applications, but if they are a black item, it is not shown...

For example in my Favorites, I have Firefox and gnome-terminal...
I can see firefox, but terminal icon is invisible... If I take my mouse to
where terminal is suppsoe to and click, it will start the terminal
program...

It is just a minor visual issue, but it is very important as I am legally
blind and I need to be able to see...
