I'm sorry to have to explain this, but your mails are completely off
topic for this list, which is about testing - as in assuring the
functionality of - Fedora. It is not about the design of upstream
components of Fedora releases. The appropriate places to discuss the
design of GNOME 3 would be the GNOME design IRC channel or the GNOME
Shell mailing list, but as a bit of friendly advice, I would suggest
that what you take to those places should be concrete proposals backed
up with evidence or at least a consistent concept, not Grand
Pronouncements That They're Doing It All Wrong. Those don't go down so
well.

Or, you could look upon it as 'utterly cryptic'. At least
multi-user.target takes a shot at explaining itself. 3...3, well, not so
much.

rebuilding F15 packages with old xz compression

2011-04-04 Thread Andre Robatino
What is the status of rebuilding packages in F15 that use the old xz
compression? There are still a significant number. (For example, I find 62 and
59 of them on the 32- and 64-bit 15-Beta.TC1 DVDs, resp.)

Comment:

I'll be happy to sponsor you into the proventesters group once you have
completed a few requirements. Please take a moment to read through the
 proventester instructions at:

 http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Proven_tester

Once you have read through the instruction, can you please confirm that
 you ...:

have read and understand the instructions, and will follow the
instructions when testing Fedora critical path updates.

understand how to enable the update-testing repository

are familiar with providing test feedback using either the Bodhi web
 interface, or the fedora-easy-karma utility

Once you confirm these three from the list above, then I will be happy to
sponsor your membership in the proventester group, after you apply for
membership of that group in FAS.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

That's a statement about getting Gnome 3 to display in the non-fallback
mode. It's not a statement about what your VNC server needs to
implement to scrape pixels out of the display. In fact most of the VNC
servers just use XGetImage() for that, which is the same thing
screenshot software uses. So to the extent that screenshots work under
gnome-shell, VNC servers should too.

I assume you state this with an implicit "I'd like this to still work in
the future" as the subtext? Otherwise I'm not sure why you'd mention it.

Thanks,

CC'd to that bug. Now, patience my young padawan.

There is another bug, but it has to deal with relabeling of the
filesystem. Since I've never had selinux enabled, that can't be it.

Failed to load SELinux policy ????

2011-04-04 Thread Brian Millett
Ok, so I've never had selinux enabled. The config is

__BEGIN__
# This file controls the state of SELinux on the system.
# SELINUX= can take one of these three values:
# enforcing - SELinux security policy is enforced.
# permissive - SELinux prints warnings instead of enforcing.
# disabled - SELinux is fully disabled.
SELINUX=disabled
# SELINUXTYPE= type of policy in use. Possible values are:
# targeted - Only targeted network daemons are protected.
# strict - Full SELinux protection.
SELINUXTYPE=targeted
__END__

I've got selinux=0 as a boot arg,

so why am I getting this message at boot time??

"Failed to load SELinux policy."

Just started after the update to

Updated: selinux-policy-3.9.16-10.fc15.noarch
Updated: selinux-policy-targeted-3.9.16-10.fc15.noarch

thanks.

I think you can log in into Gnome Shell, start VNC, and connect from another
machine to view/control the desktop.

But you can't start the session over VNC on a client without 3D hardware
support, that will fall back to Gnome 2.

What happens when they see your "find and catch me if you can" GNOME 3 menus ?

Either go back to GNOME-2-type menus, or *at least* offer it as a configurable
option.
Do it now while you are still in early dev phase, so you can adjust other GUI
design concepts and elements accordingly.

You will be glad you did it.
If not IT (support) people then the business end users will force it upon them
and you. Or they will avoid your products as "geeky" and "unreliable".

Odd rebalancing behavior

2011-04-04 Thread Michel Alexandre Salim
I have an external 4-disk enclosure, connected through USB 2.0 (my
laptop does not have a USB 3.0 connector, and the eSATA connector
somehow does not work); it initially had a 2-disk btrfs soft-RAID1 file
system (both data and metadata are RAID1).

I recently added two more disks and did a rebalance. To my surprise it
went past the point where all four disks have the same amount of disk
usage, and went all the way to the original disks being empty, and the
new disks having all the data!

Label: 'media.store' uuid: 4cfd3551-aa85-4399-b872-9238ddb14c97
Total devices 4 FS bytes used 1.22TB
devid3 size 1.82TB used 1.24TB path /dev/sdb
devid4 size 1.82TB used 1.24TB path /dev/sdc
devid2 size 1.82TB used 8.00MB path /dev/sde
devid1 size 1.82TB used 12.00MB path /dev/sdd

Is this to be expected? Would another rebalance fix it, or should I
force-stop it by shutting down when the disk usage is roughly balanced?

This is on Fedora 15 pre-release, x86_64, fully updated, kernel
2.6.38.2-9 and btrfs-progs 0.19-13

Thanks,

easier way for deltaiso users to deal with the xz compression change

2011-04-04 Thread Andre Robatino
Previously I posted instructions for temporarily upgrading the xz
compression on a F14 box to be able to work with deltaisos for F15 and
later:

http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/test/2011-February/097009.html

Michael Young's method at

http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/test/2011-April/098540.html

is much nicer, since not only is it simpler (at least if you've used
rpmbuild a little), but once you create the executable, you can just use
it on your existing system without changing packages. I've posted
executables at

http://robatino.fedorapeople.org/deltaiso_executables/

so you can either use these, or roll your own. See the README concerning
the version (f14 vs. f15). Most people will need the f15 version. The
f14 versions are only for someone running F15 or later and needing to
use a diso for F14 or below, which is uncommon.

Of course, if you are using F14 or below and need to use a diso for F14
or below, or using F15 or above and need to use a diso for F15 or above,
then just use the deltaiso package from the Fedora repos.
