Managed to get to the boot menu and boot in level 3. It seems

Release Criteria for image sizes

2011-04-09 Thread Andre Robatino
Bruno Wolff III bruno at wolff.to writes:

Should there be release criteria for image sizes? Would we block the release
because the the install image was larger than 4 GiB (which would effect
downloads) or 4.7 GB (which would prevent it from being put on many DVDs)?
Would we block because a CD sized live Desktop or live KDE image was over
 size?

Recently there was an issue where a late change bumped the KDE image over
CD size and then there was an even later reversion just before the freeze
to get it undersize again, that reminded me to look for release criteria for
 image sizes.

My opinion is that for the Alpha and Beta release oversize images aren't
that big of a deal, since they genrally won't impact testing significantly.
I think for final it makes some sense to have a criteria for over size
images, particularly for CD sized live images that are allowed to block
 the release for other issues.

The current criterion (which is an Alpha requirement on the install test matrix)
is at

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Testcase_Mediakit_ISO_Size

The sizes are basically those for fitting on the corresponding media. The
openSUSE download page

http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/

shows DVD ISO sizes bigger than 4 GiB for a while now (at least as far back as
11.1).

That looks reasonable and certainly we want to be looking at that at the
alpha, but I am not sure that failure results in blocking the release.
We do have a page now that lists the target size for each spin. It is
at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/15/Spins for F15. The main
difference is that nothing is targeting 4.7 GB.

The question I had was is there or should there be a release criterion
at some point where we would block the release because of an oversize image.

The sizes are basically those for fitting on the corresponding media. The

Spins SIG decided against going over 4 GiB for spins because then the file
wouldn't be downloadable onto FAT file systems of which there is still
significant use. As time goes on we will probably change that, but for now
I think it is a reasonable restriction. It pretty much only affects the
games spin currently.

This hardware appears to be a write-off for Gnome3 now (see the
comment by Owen Taylor at the BZ below), but I'll still point out
something interesting I saw on my other ATI.

I happen to have an RV200, which I tried with F15BetaRC1, and while
it was generally unusable for many reasons, the fonts were not corrupted
as they are with RV250/280. So, I think that may support the idea of
there just being a bug in the R200 implementation.

I don't remember if I had to manually add it to the startup apps (run
gnome-session-properties) or using a preference in gnote itself, but I
have it running on login on my laptop. The icon shows up in the
notification tray - mouse to the lower right corner to bring it up -
this is where all legacy tray icons will show up.

Installed Fedora 15 Beta RC2 x86_64 from netinstall, NetworkManager keeps

Worse, using ifup em2 will not get online access.
That behaviour did not happen on Alpha version and i686 Fedora 15 Beta based

Gnome shell corruption

2011-04-09 Thread mwesten
I happen to have an RV200, which I tried with F15BetaRC1, and while
it was generally unusable for many reasons, the fonts were not corrupted
as they are with RV250/280. So, I think that may support the idea of
there just being a bug in the R200 implementation.

Yes, this was at time when gnome-shell run with nomodeset (e.g. without
KMS). It was slow, but it was displayed properly.

Adam Pribyl

I just booted the LiveCD as is on the RV200. KMS was enabled and the
speed wasn't a problem. It had other severe rendering/shading issues, plus
something I did completely hung the box.

Getting back to RV250/280, I saw that Red Hat BZ 679579 has a reference
to freedesktop BZ 34280, which sure looks like the same problem (at least
in the tuxracer example). More importantly, one of the guys there has a
patch against mesa for it which seems to work for him. Perhaps that could
be investigated to find out if it applies to Gnome as well?

QA Test Day spin changed to use favorites more

2011-04-09 Thread Bruno Wolff III
I tried to get back some of the features that the QA Test Day spin had
before the change to gnome shell. I now have some of the desktop icons
working as favorites instead. firefox has been set to have the current
test day page as the start page and not to show a welcome page the first
use after every reboot.

If you guys want it tweaked some more, the code there now should provide a
basis for making related changes.

The install to hard drive may need some more work. In live base it was changed
to anaconda and I am not sure why. When I tried liveinst out I got an error
message that seemed not to be directly related to having it as a favorite.
