Aug 9 RC2

2011-08-09 Thread Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX N2469R
The Aug 9 RC2 dis not throw an unhandled exception when
"basic storage devices" looked at my main HD with a variety
of Linux and Windows systems on it.

But it did complain that swap areas lacked UUID protection.
(What's wrong with looking at the partition ID?)
So I dutifully told the installer to reformat all swap partitions.
This caused the install process to wedge.

I rebooted and selected "specialized storage devices" and
installed F16 with about 2000 packages. As usual, the
boot loader installation elicited a complaint.

I fixed the booting problem by running Ubuntu's recovery
grub rebuild option.

F16 booted but wedged after noting no ipv6 routers
present on eth0.

64 bit Fedora 16 RC2, Intel i5 with 8 GB RAM, Gefore 460SE,
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3, basic video install option.

F16/RC2 x86_64 desktop does not boot completely

2011-08-09 Thread Joachim Backes
Hi,

Anybody sees this too:

After downloading the F16/TC2 x86_64 desktop ISO and burning it, I
booted from the CD media: No GDM after boot, the last messsage on the
console is "Started D-Bus System Message Bus". The ribbon on the buttom
of the screen is completely white (this took much time!!) . No progress,
no reboot with CtrlAltDel. I have to press the reset button.

1. Seeing the same if using the standard boot (not minimal VGA).
2. Same result if booting F16/RC2 inside of VirtualBox
3. The media check is OK

Kind regards

Joachim Backes

We're working on that. The reason RC3 was spun was because we thought it
was solved with an selinux-policy update that was included in RC3. This
is all documented in the bug.

723047 filed previously.

There are a lot of other anaconda issues (bzs filed) and when I finally
got an install done, won't boot even after following the instructions on
the grub2 feature page.

Maybe prudence says there should be an escape method other than no
bootloader.

I'll keep plugging away comforted with the knowledge that all of this
will be sorted out when heavier testing by a larger group gets underway.

I don't see how it can be a "go" if Live doesn't work without

I'm surprised RC3 was rushed so quickly with no resoution to this. I

Keywords: pattern after, might.

I suspect the actual *buntu problem may be in parted, not debian-installer.
Does Anaconda not used parted?

Don't assume that. The implementation of the installer is entirely
different. If you find issues during testing, do file them. Needless
to say, this can be treated as a blocker

The reason I brought this up is my assumption that Fedora's Grub2
installation might pattern itself after *buntu's, which destroys OS/2 LVM
information situated in the sector preceding the EBR for /dev/XdX5 even when
all partitioning has taken place prior to system installation, and thus
nothing should be written regarding such base EBR sector in the MBR table.
IOW, the *buntu process advances the first sector of the extended partition
by one from the standard location.

The only difference between RC2 and RC3 is that RC3 includes the
libreport update which fixes
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=692433 - reporting anaconda
failures. Given the tight time before go/no-go tomorrow, I suggest we
combine RC2 and RC3 test results: for RC3, please focus on testing
things that haven't yet been filled in in the RC2 matrices, so between
RC2 and RC3 we have all Alpha tests covered. And, of course, re-do the
tests which hit 692433 in RC2 - most importantly,
QA:Testcase_Anaconda_save_traceback_to_bugzilla . Thanks everyone!

[Test-Announce] Fedora 16 Alpha Release Candidate 3 (RC3) Available Now!

2011-08-09 Thread Andre Robatino
As per the Fedora 16 schedule [1], Fedora 16 Alpha Release Candidate 3
(RC3) is now available for testing. Please see the following pages for
download links and testing instructions. In general, official live
images arrive a few hours after the install images: see the links below
for updates. When they appear, the download directory should be the same
as that for install images, except with the trailing "/Fedora/" replaced
by "/Live/".

Installation:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Installation_Test

Base:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Base_Test

Desktop:

Security Lab:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Security_Lab_Test

Ideally, all Alpha priority test cases for Installation [2], Base [3],
and Desktop [4] should pass in order to meet the Alpha Release Criteria
[5]. Help is available on #fedora-qa on irc.freenode.net [6], or on the
test list [7].

If you choose custom partitioning or to review your partition layout,
you will be dumped into the bootloader config screen later. From there,
you can choose to not install a bootloader.

Then there needs to be an option to install no bootloader. There's no excuse
for making anything so poorly documented the default anything, much less an
only anything.

Well, I have been trying, filed one bug against grub2 and trying to get
an install of 16 booted so I can see if there is anything there to look
at. Will get one filed somehow.

Suspect that --force has to be used somewhere in the install of the
bootloader if the boot partition is other that the MBR partition. I.e.,
F16 boot on /dev/sdf4 vice /dev/sda where the MBR is located.

I'm not sure if this will be configurable in that manner. The best
option at this time might be to install Fedora 15, while adding the
Fedora 16 branched repos during install. That might not be exactly what
you want though.

I checked in with the kind folks in #anaconda ... for fresh Fedora 16
installations, only grub2 will be used.

Thanks,
James

Actually, I was looking for a way to *not* use grub2 during F16 install
as it is failing with an unknown error and you can't boot an F16
installation without jumping thru a bunch a hoops with a recovery cd.

Would you do package customization during the package selection phase of
installation?

TIA
