Printing Test Day on Thursday (2011-10-06)

2011-10-03 Thread Tim Waugh
The Printing Test Day for Fedora 16 is this week:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-10-06_Printing

This event will focus on all aspects of printing; including printer
setup, printer sharing and printing jobs.

There are several parts of the operating system to be tested:

* CUPS, and the various drivers
* the GTK+ print dialog
* The GNOME 3 parts that integrate with printing:
  - System Settings 'Printers' module
  - Status feedback notifications (gnome-settings-daemon)
* system-config-printer for more advanced set-ups

Full instructions are available on the wiki page¹ and there will be
people in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC² throughout the day.

If you have some time spare on Thursday please drop in. Thanks!

After using this to rebuild the guest additions in my F16 VirtualBox 4.1.2
guest, I get the Oh No screen and am unable to log in graphically from the GDM
screen (which looks cool, by the way). It claims that the alternative status
menu might be responsible, but the problem continues after I disable it. If no
one knows how to fix this, I'll go back to the standard guest additions.

That's good to know.

It works for me but I boot to run level 3 and I'm using KDE desktop.

I'll test run level 5 and check out the cool looks.

Thanks

Karma request for F16 Beta updates

2011-10-03 Thread Adam Williamson
Hey, folks - we need to up-karma all the updates that went into F16 Beta
so they can be pushed out to mirrors ahead of release, so people who net
install with updates-testing disabled will get the Beta package set.

The remaining updates which need karma are:

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2011-13478 (anaconda)
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/grub-0.97-79.fc16

for the first one, you can +1 if Beta RC4 installed for you, pretty
much. For the second, you need to have an F16 system with grub (not
grub2), which many of you who updated from F15 may have. Or if you have
an EFI-capable system and can confirm you can install Beta RC4 via EFI
and boot it, that's a good test too.

Once these hit +3 karma we should be done with Beta packages! Thanks
all.

Happened to me too, but just before I went for the power button it did shut

There's another update if you want to try it and see if that fixes or
 stops the problem your having.

It _is_ some sort of timeout indeed, but I only use LUKS on LVM, which
doesn't sound like crypto-on-lvm-on-crypto disk layout as mentioned
in the package changelog comment. Unless the fix is also for similar
setups such as mine.

Will give the koji builds a try...

I'd probably only to be able to give a +0. The system boots with grub
and kernel updates work (but they did as soon as I removed grub2 and now
you can't have both). I don't see a fix for the grub-install issue, so
mostly likely that part is still broken and fixing it after a bad test
is a bit of a pain.

Just my 2c. I use Fedora Xen DomU and will be hoping to run F16 that way
 when it's released.

Currently using F14 and it's solid after the awful start with:

Bug 550724 - xen PV guest kernel 2.6.32 processes lock up in D state

.. which is fixed in 2.6.39 IMHO.

What would be also useful is to be able to have guests larger than 32G
 without rebuilding the kernel.

Hm, that ought to work (2.6.39 and later) ? Do you have a BZ for this?
The default limit is 128G:

 Madisonville,

Doesn't work for me, still no log-in menu. Downgrading gdm returns normal
operation. I tested with systemd-36-4, it was newer :)

hmm, maybe my problem is that the machine was yum upgraded from f15 or f14

that would explain why there's no recovery mode in grub menu, maybe.

the system was reinstalled from f16 beta (rc4) and i've found that, after i
install akmod-nvidia, the behaviour is the same, no video output after boot
is over. removeing *nvidia* fixes the problem.

sounds very much like this:

i've seen this too on another nvidia video card system before f15 was
released.

Re: Karma request for F16 Beta updates

2011-10-03 Thread Michał Piotrowski
Hi,

2011/10/3 Adam Williamson awill...@redhat.com:
Hey, folks - we need to up-karma all the updates that went into F16 Beta
so they can be pushed out to mirrors ahead of release, so people who net
install with updates-testing disabled will get the Beta package set.

The remaining updates which need karma are:

 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2011-13478 (anaconda)
 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/grub-0.97-79.fc16

Grub works fine here

for the first one, you can +1 if Beta RC4 installed for you, pretty

Thanks
 all.

f 16 beta in virtualbox

2011-10-03 Thread Andre Robatino
I'm able now to log in graphically in F16 and get Gnome Shell, but only with the
alternative status menu extension disabled. (The Alt trick to see the Power
Off... option works, at least.) In Rawhide, I still can't log in graphically at
all, even with the gnome-shell-extension-* packages removed. Today there were
F16 updates for gnome-shell-extension-* so that might account for the
difference.

With the regular guest additions, I would get fallback mode in both, and that
worked normally.

The 'advanced graphics' video feature in Virtualbox seldom works in
Rawhide and the current 'branched' package (currently Fedora 16) because
Virtualbox does not support alpha/beta/non-release versions of Xorg.

This has gotten worse since it was decided to kill system-config-display
and make monitor recognition and resolution into 'plug-n-pray'.

Yes.

What would be also useful is to be able to have guests larger than 32G

Hm, that ought to work (2.6.39 and later) ? Do you have a BZ for this?
 The default limit is 128G:
 CONFIG_XEN_MAX_DOMAIN_MEMORY=128

Great. I had not checked the later kernels. Sorry for the noise.

My main point is that a broken Xen DomU in the final release would be
a pain for me. Just wanted to add a +1.
