Can't see groups?

2011-10-15 Thread Jonathan Kamens

For some reason my F16 system is not recognizing the groups that I'm in:

jik2:~!1016$ whoami
jik
jik2:~!1017$ groups
jik
jik2:~!1018$ groups jik
jik : jik
jik2:~!1019$ grep -w jik /etc/group
jackuser:x:488:jik
jik:x:3009:
build:x:3010:jik
boinc:x:462:jik
vboxusers:x:3038:jik
wireshark:x:453:jik
jik2:~!1020$

This is not just the "groups" command malfunctioning; I am indeed unable
to do things which I should be able to do as a member of the "vboxusers"
group:

jik2:~!1020$ mkdir /tmp/test
jik2:~!1021$ sudo chown root.vboxusers /tmp/test
[sudo] password for jik:
jik2:~!1022$ sudo chmod 770 /tmp/test
jik2:~!1023$ touch /tmp/test/write-test
touch: cannot touch `/tmp/test/write-test': Permission denied
jik2:~!1024$

I have selinux disabled.

Any suggestions for what's going on here and how to fix it would be very
much appreciated. It is causing problems for me.

Thanks,

Jonathan Kamens

Hi there,

I'v just migrated today and it was pretty simple actually

i went into /boot/grub2 folder and did...

grub2-mkconfig -o grub.cfg

then

grub2-install /dev/sda

obviously your /dev/sd?? is whatever your boot drive is
and it worked first time. I'v just copied over some of the old kernel
parameters like vga=0x305 and nouveau.modeset=0 and rdblacklist=nouveau.
your's might not have them don't know, but it boots ok

No, I was seeing it as well on Intel graphics, although I'm not seeing

I tested this with F16 systems (I haven't quite gotten to rebooting my
rawhode machine yet) and things still work. I tested doing a kernel upgrade
afterwards and it also worked, though there were messages from grubby.

The key grub info is in the mbr and /boot and none of those places are
touched when grub is removed. grubby will try to update both grub and grub2
configs for kernel updates.

So things should be fine at least until you try to change over to using
grub2 to boot. (That I haven't tried yet.)

I've got the same problem here on F16 - grub2 from updates-testing
wants to replace grub.

Why now? Why not while F15->F16 update?

programming language you prefer, making Bazaar Fast Import useful for teams

Grub -> grub2?

2011-10-15 Thread Jonathan Corbet
So today yum wants to put grub2 onto my rawhide system, nudging grub out
of the way in the process. This makes me nervous. Last time I read
about this, it wasn't a straightforward update from one to the other. If
that has changed, could somebody please give me a warm fuzzy feeling that
allowing that update would be a rational thing to do?

Thanks,

F16 upgrades specifically emails

2011-10-15 Thread Mike Chambers
OK, think have problem. Upgraded server box (emails, file storage type
stuff) to F16 via yum. Everything seems to be ok, so far.

Now, I use email via evolution and imap to my lil server. It was
working ok to receive/send via when it was on F15 earlier this morning
before upgrading. Now I can send an email (as you are reading this,
which would be good), but no emails are showing up to my username or now
transferring or something. I normally see them go to my inbox but I
also have filters and they go to their respective folders. But I don't
see the emails going to any of my folders.

Now, what could somehow be related, is I changed my username ID's from
500-1000 few days ago and it all seemed to work before the upgrade
today. Sendmail and dovecot both seem to be running and start with no
errors.

All of a sudden a permission or something is wrong? Or a service I
can't think of also needs to be running now?

Heh, figured out nfs-server.service needed to be turned on and started
for it to work. All seems well now, unless my emails aren't getting out
as haven't seen this orginal email just yet.

NFS from F16 upgrade

2011-10-15 Thread Mike Chambers
OK, had box running F15 as my lil home server, mainly email, file
storage, etc.. and have nfs directory setup to mount on a client side
machine (my workstation). Worked fine bout 10 mins ago.

UPgraded the box to F16 (via yum) and no errors and rebooted. Booted up
fine (from what can tell) and seems to be working, including email. But
can't mount the nfs directory now.

Something change and now need to look at/edit something to reconfigure,
or make sure some service is starting that might be new or something?

It can take around an hour after the new install ISOs are available to generate
the disos. I post the announcement as soon as the releng ticket (
https://fedorahosted.org/rel-eng/ticket/4951 in this case) indicates that the
ISOs are available, so the disos may not be available yet. In this case there
was indeed over an hour's delay. My diso script runs both makedeltaiso and then
applydeltaiso to make sure the disos rebuild properly, so that accounts for up
to a factor of 2 in the time. I think it's worth it, since for 15 Alpha TC2
there was a bug preventing the disos from working, and I caught it through
checking (the bug was fixed quickly by M. A. Young and working disos were posted
a few days later).

The directory listing in http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/deltaisos/ is
mostly alphabetical except that unfortunately TC comes after RC. You can click
on "Last modified" at the top to sort them accordingly.

Tried downloading the diso file but I'm getting
BackupPC.i686 (xz.2): applying delta
payload uncompress error

when doing the applydeltaiso

Checksum is correct

After logging out and back in, desktop background was empty and black.

The warnings are not helpful. Which component "failed to create drawable"?

And which one "Failed to play sound" without printing the path it failed to
find?
