You were attempting to pipe the output of `grep shell` to a program
called `/var/log/messages`. '/var/log/messages' is not executable, so
bash fails with that permission denied error. Since you're missing
the third argument to `grep`, it waits for input from stdin to search,
which is why you had to CTRL+C to get back to the shell.

Drop the pipe symbol so the command reads `grep shell
/var/log/messages` and you'll instead search /var/log/messages for
"shell". ;-)

You were attempting to pipe the output of `grep shell` to a program

2012-03-18 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

I was trying to look at the system messages this evening, and this is what
I got...

[root@BurningBushes ~]# grep shell | /var/log/messages
-bash: /var/log/messages: Permission denied

It didn't display anything on my terminal window, and I had to do a
[Control] C to get out of it...

The pair of packages

17 Beta TC2 DVD minimal install won't use packages from media

2012-03-18 Thread Andre Robatino
Doing a minimal install from the 17 Beta TC2 i386 DVD, all packages appear to be
downloaded instead of grabbed from the media. I'm pretty sure this didn't happen
with Beta TC1 since it makes the install much slower for me. Am not sure exactly
how to characterize the bug or what component to file against. Can other people
reproduce this?

[Test-Announce] Fedora 17 Beta Test Compose 2 (TC2) Available Now!

2012-03-18 Thread Andre Robatino
As per the Fedora 17 schedule [1], Fedora 17 Beta Test Compose 2 (TC2)
is now available for testing. Content information, including changes,
can be found at https://fedorahosted.org/rel-eng/ticket/5116 . Please
see the following pages for download links (including delta ISOs) and
testing instructions. Normally dl.fedoraproject.org should provide the
fastest download, but download-ib01.fedoraproject.org is available as a
mirror (with an approximately 1 hour lag) in case of trouble. To use it,
just replace "dl" with "download-ib01" in the download URL.

From the rel-eng ticket: "there is no 32 bit LXDE and no gnome live
images since they failed to compose"

Base:

Ideally, all Alpha and Beta priority test cases for Installation [2],
Base [3], and Desktop [4] should pass in order to meet the Beta Release
Criteria [5]. Help is available on #fedora-qa on irc.freenode.net [6],

The Shell freeze Joachim and I have seen isn't a complete system freeze,
you can ctrl-alt-f2 to a console and kill gnome-shell to recover from
it.

Subject: gnome-shell desktop freezes sometimes in F17
Hi,

there are 2 situations where my gnome3 desktop sometimes freezes:

Over the last two days, I have noticed that my entire computer will freeze
up, and I have to do a hard shut-down for it to work again!

It really makes me angry! I make random saves of my work when I am working
on my computer, but it still seems to catch me before I am done...

I have not been able to determine when or what might be doing to trigger
it...

Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

1. during opening the favourites bar (move the mouse pointer to top-left)
2. during a "yum update" inside a gnome-terminal (very weird)

Sometimes I have to wait for a lot of seconds until the freezing
finishes, but in most cases I have to go to a tty window and "pkill
-HUP gnome-shell".

My video chip:

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Anybody made similar experiences?

Hi, I have a core i3 first Gen and right now xfce and gnome shell don't
load and kde only works in recovery mode (if I do something intensive I
have to sit and wait like a good old Pentium 1).
I wish to know if this Intel only, but I have a ram use of ~ 1.5gb of 3 when
normally I use no more than 500mb. I am desperately waiting for the beta
because I thing this is kernel related.
I hope this help

I have a different repeatable freeze:
3. switch to non X vt and back.
I think the freeze is much shorter with a non debug kernel (right now
I'm running with the last f18 kernel built as a release kernel).

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated

Actually, yeah, I've seen it freeze a couple times when activating the
overview with the mouse pointer. I guess we need to reproduce and file a
bug with a backtrace.

gnome-shell desktop freezes sometimes in F17

2012-03-18 Thread Joachim Backes
Hi,

there are 2 situations where my gnome3 desktop sometimes freezes:

1. during opening the favourites bar (move the mouse pointer to top-left)
2. during a "yum update" inside a gnome-terminal (very weird)

Sometimes I have to wait for a lot of seconds until the freezing
finishes, but in most cases I have to go to a tty window and "pkill
-HUP gnome-shell".

My video chip:

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Anybody made similar experiences?
