Re: Many different failures with Fedora-19-Beta-TC3-x86_64-netinst.iso, no successes

2013-05-04 Thread Jay Finger
Ok, I just figured out how to file a bug. There's too many different
things that one needs to log into for this.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=959729

I'm not sure I did the right thing for the "Component" field. I selected
"ht", which is one of the two conflicting packages. Perhaps this should be
filed against something related to initial setup or something? Please let
me know.

Re: Many different failures with Fedora-19-Beta-TC3-x86_64-netinst.iso, no successes

2013-05-04 Thread Jay Finger
I would like to create a bug in bugzilla for this issue, but I can't seem
to locate a button to do so. Probably a noob issue. Regardless, how do I
do so?

Well I should have thought to look in /tmp. But that also seems like a
design flaw: why doesn't anaconda put the log files where people know to
look for them?

In /tmp/packaging.log I see:
01:16:01,811 DEBUG packaging: Transaction couldn't start:
01:16:01,813 DEBUG packaging: file /usr/bin/ht conflicts between attempted
installs of ht-2.0.18-4.fc19.x86_x64 and
texlive-tex4ht-bin-2:svn26509.0-22.20130427_r30134.fc19.x86_64
01:16:01.813 ERR packaging: YumRPMTransError Could not run transaction.

Multiple problems here:
1) The error message presented to the user completely sucks. Showing "file
/usr/bin/ht conflicts between attempted installs of
ht-2.0.18-4.fc19.x86_x64 and
texlive-tex4ht-bin-2:svn26509.0-22.20130427_r30134.fc19.x86_64" would not
be helpful to most people, but is far better than "YumRPMTransError Could
not run transaction".

2) The actual useful info is report as a DEBUG message in the log.

3) Nothing is presented to the user to report the bug, which means that
Fedora folks get no feedback as to how many people encounter this.

Having said that, this is _not_ a beta blocker.

I think it should be a release blocker, though. The scenario for this was
to select "GNOME Desktop", then select all of the additional packages for
that environment.

No, but a bug filed against the offending package would be considered a
release blocker.

Anaconda keeps its logs in /tmp, not in /var/log.
The syslog is not in /var/log/messages but instead is in /tmp/syslog.

Would the inability to select the KDE desktop, due to dependency issues,
qualify for a -1?

Many different failures with Fedora-19-Beta-TC3-x86_64-netinst.iso, no successes

2013-05-04 Thread Jay Finger
I have tried installing from Fedora-19-Beta-TC3-x86_64-netinst.iso on three
occasions now. System is VMWare Fusion 5.0.3, each time with a virgin VM
with new 20GB drive.

The first time it hung during installation. I failed to write down the
package it said it was hung at: I decided I would run it again to make
sure it wasn't my bad before reporting. Sorry, that was silly of me. By
"hung" I mean I didn't see progress for several minutes, then went
shopping, and after returning three hours later it was still at the same
place.

On the second attempt I got a nice error from Anaconda, from which I
submitted 959710 using the built-in bug reporting.

On the third attempt I began the installation, set the root password and
set up a user account, and walked away for a while. When I came back I am
faced with a box that says "The following error occurred while installing.
This is a fatal error and installation will be aborted. YumRPMTransError
Could not run transaction.", with a button for "Exit Installer". I do not
see where any logs are for this. Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a console and
/var/log/message is empty, no yum logs. Since this is a VM I'm just going
to save it off, and if somebody replies with hints to provide more
information I will gladly do so.

TC3 testing

2013-05-04 Thread Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX N2469R
Recent Fedora 19 kernels have been flakey on my ECS 945GCT-m/1333
motherboard
with a Celeron 430 and 2GB RAM. That combination has been rock solid
with Fedora 16

but Fedora 19 locks up the disk i/o with the disk activity light on solid.

I like the Celeron 430 because its power drain is low.

I replaced the ECS motherboard with an Intel DG33BU. I transferred the
430 and GPIB
card to the DG33BU and Fedora 19 Beta TC3 Xfce install (from a jump
drive) seems happy.

On the Core Duo 6550 box I tried using standard partitions instead of
LVM. No luck.

I gave up and installed today's Rawhide using FC18 pxeboot.

On my main office machine (32GB 3660K) I cleaned out the Linux
partitions with fdisk and installed

Beta TC3 Xfce from the jump drive.

The bugs and hardware dependencies I've reported previously remain.
NFS mounts provoke a segfault.
The GNOME file manager does not associate WINE with .exe files.

Wine works on the 3770K installing and running Lady Heather and Ham
Radio Deluxe.

The long delays while installing Ham Radio Deluxe remain.
Wine will not install these apps on the Core Duo 6550 or Celeron 430.

QA:Testcase_desktop_updates proposal

2013-05-04 Thread Bob Lightfoot
Dear Testers:
I have run the test at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Testcase_desktop_updates several fimes
recently and would like to propose the following clarifiction addition
for others who might run this test.

How to Test step 5 reads "Wait for more updates to become available,
manually downgrade some packages so updates for them are again
available, or re-install "

I wish to add a box note like the "Tip for shortening the waiting time
to the updates notification" called "Tip for manually downgrading
packages".

"Tip for manually downgrading packages".
To find a package to downgrade the following steps can be taken:
1. Open a terminal and login as root or use sudo for the following commands.

2. Run command to deterime the instance number of the
last yum update, most likely it will be 2.

3. Run command #instance-number# is
the last instance from yum history.

4. Choose a package or packages from the info list, it may be necessary
to pipe the output to less or more to view.

5. Run command https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test

Oh, and please don't anyone -1 the update because of the password
masking drama. The update feedback process isn't a good way to discuss
design decisions. There's other escalation paths for that if it proves
necessary. (I think the masking thing was in the previous anaconda build
too, anyhow.)

Beta TC3 karma requests

2013-05-04 Thread Adam Williamson
Hey folks! Just wanted to let everyone know, if TC3 installation is more
or less working for you, please up-karma
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/python-blivet-0.12-1.fc19,anaconda-19.24-1.fc19
 and
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2013-7275/python-meh-0.24-1.fc19
so we can get them pushed stable ASAP and before we need to do another build.
Thanks! It would also be good to get karma on
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2013-7106/glib2-2.36.1-2.fc19 ;
it should fix boot of the LXDE live image, but just as long as glib2-based
stuff is working for you, karma would be helpful.

Use custom partitioning. It should be pretty obvious in there.
