systemd-journald flush hangs system

2013-12-11 Thread Ralf Corsepius

Hi,

I am facing a weird issue on an f20 test system:

During a yum update in an attempt to update this machine from the status
ca. a week ago to today's, a message appears:

# yum update
...
systemd-journald[...]: Received request to flush runtime journal from
PID 1

[hangs]

After this message, the system appears to be hung and non-responsive.
The yum process hangs, Ctl-Alt-FX doesn't work, no visible disk activity.

However, pressing the power-off button seems to trigger a proper
systemd-controlled shutdown.

What is going on?

With limited info it could be the kernel or it could simply be short on
space on /var ?

Follow http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/Debugging/ and see
if you get something more meaningful

No. Though this is a small RAM and small disk system, space doesn't seem
to be the issue, this time.

Though this issue meanwhile has happened 3 times, I am still pretty
clueless. I can't spot anything remarkable or deterministic error
message in /var/log/messages (rsp. journalctl).

The only noteworthy systemd messages, I am observing is frequent
messages of this kind in /var/log/messages:

...
Dec 11 16:57:02 gunvald1 dbus-daemon: dbus[580]: [system] Activating via
systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.ModemManager1'
unit='dbus-org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service'
Dec 11 16:57:02 gunvald1 dbus-daemon: dbus[580]: [system] Activation via
systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service':
Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service failed to load: No such
file or directory.
Dec 11 16:57:02 gunvald1 dbus[580]: [system] Activating via systemd:

unit='dbus-org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service'

failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service': Unit
dbus-org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service failed to load: No such file
or directory.

...

However, when the hanger happened for the 3rd time, I was logged in
from remote. From this, I can tell the system is still alive, except
that the console appears to be gone.

Re: Heisenbug slightly ubstable?

2013-12-11 Thread Robert M. Albrecht

Hi,

I have a new (to me) and very strange network problem.

The IPV4 is stable, but from time to time the interface loses it's IPV6
global unicast.

The ULA and link local are still there.

After some minutes the global unicast magically reappears. Restarting
the network does work too.

The global unicast address is assigned by router advertisment.

This did not happens some months ago. Sadly I have no clue when this
problem exactly showed up.

VNC sessions have terminated for no apparent reason. A number

refuses to send information to Bugzilla because the kernel is
somehow tainted.

Last night the local net interface stopped working. Machines
on the local net could still ping each other but Heisenbug could
not talk to any of them. I tried toggling the port with Network
Manager
to no avail. Restarting Network Manager didn't help either.
A reboot was needed to put things back in order.

Hi Chuck,

I have no answers, just a few questions for comparison. (1) Are you
seeing IRQ nobody cared messages on local interfaces? (2) Are your
interfaces using RealTek eth controllers? And, finally, have you done
any network performance tuning? i.e. tweaking parms like
net.core.rmem_max?

Thanks
Flash

1: No such messages in any file in /var/log
2. The local internet is interfaced with an Intel Gigabit 82579V on the
motherboard.
The only RealTek chip on the motherboard is the audio controller.
3. I have not performed any network tuning or any overclocking on this
system.

This update fixes a bug that's accepted as a freeze exception. It would be nice
for it to get some testing, so we know if there's a regression or if it fixes

I am. I can't reproduce it reliably though. It happens randomly here.

Maybe need to go to more aggressive kernel parameters to get more information.

Fedora 20 Final status report

2013-12-11 Thread Adam Williamson
Sorry I didn't do more of these, but mostly, the people who've had work
to do have known about it, and we've just been trying to get it all
done...

We have an RC1 compose running at the moment. Go/No-Go is tomorrow
(12-12), and RC1 is substantially different from TC5, so we really need
to run through as many of the validation tests as we possibly can with
RC1. I'll try and notify in #fedora-qa and by email once the key RC1
builds that come out of Koji - desktop and KDE x86 lives, and the cloud
and ARM images - are done; we'll have to wait a bit longer for the DVD
and netinst.

The validation matrices, as always, will be available at:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Installation_Test
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Desktop_Test
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Base_Test

Right now those redirects are still pointing to TC5, but we'll bump them
to RC1 as soon as we have something to test. If as many folks as
possible can pitch in and help test, that'd be great. I and other QA
folks will be on hand on IRC, in #fedora-qa and other channels, if you
have any questions, from now till the go/no-go.

If you hit any significant issues, please report it in #fedora-qa or to
the list and/or file a bug and mark it as blocking the bug
FinalBlocker (or use the webapp -
https://qa.fedoraproject.org/blockerbugs/propose_bug - to nominate it as
blocker/FE).

Thanks!

The desktop (GNOME) and KDE lives for both Intel arches are now done:

http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org//work/tasks/2020/6282020/Fedora-Minimal-VFAT-armhfp-20-1-sda.raw.xz

the KDE ARM builds are still running, but should be done soonish. Cloud
task is complete:

http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=6282038

but I'm not sufficiently cloud-y to know whether you can do anything
with the image file from that task, or if releng have to do stuff to it
before it's usable.

We'll notify once the compose is fully done, of course, but for now it'd
be great if folks can get a head start on testing with those images.

Update Information:

Upgrade to version 0.6 because version 0.4 hasn't been maintained upstream in
more than 5 years. Noticable difference besides the more polished UI and new
courses: the executable was renamed from `etracer` to `etr`.

Curious, why it blew up right now, just before F20 is released. It

Workaround is to yum group mark remove group name here for every group
on the list. What a waste of time.

Whatever you do - do not run yum group mark convert. Now one of my systems
wants to install every Fedora package with yum update.

This affects all Fedoras with yum -120. Here's the parent bug:

It looks like setting upgrade_group_objects_upgrade=0 or
group_command=simple sorts that issue out. (FWIW, I went for the
big-axe solution and 'yum group mark remove' all the groups yum
complained about, ~ 20+ groups).

Honestly I still can't get my head around that yum-groups-as-objects change...

[Test-Announce] Fedora 20 Final Release Candidate 1 (RC1) Available Now!

2013-12-11 Thread Andre Robatino
NOTE: The 32-bit Install DVD is over its size limit.

As per the Fedora 20 schedule [1], Fedora 20 Final Release Candidate 1
(RC1) is now available for testing. Content information, including
changes, can be found at
https://fedorahosted.org/rel-eng/ticket/5808#comment:15 . Please see the
following pages for download links (including delta ISOs) and testing
instructions. Normally dl.fedoraproject.org should provide the fastest
download, but download-ib01.fedoraproject.org is available as a mirror
(with an approximately 1 hour lag) in case of trouble. To use it, just
replace dl with download-ib01 in the download URL.

Installation:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Installation_Test

Base:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Base_Test

Desktop:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Results:Current_Desktop_Test

Ideally, all Alpha, Beta, and Final priority test cases for Installation
[2], Base [3], and Desktop [4] should pass in order to meet the Final
Release Criteria [5]. Help is available on #fedora-qa on
irc.freenode.net [6], or on the test list [7].
