Self-introduction: Alan Ernhart

2016-06-20 Thread Alan Ernhart
Hi,

I'm Alan Ernhart and reside in the USA. I've a couple decades in software
test automation, including performance testing at IBM and development of a
Python framework for testing of REST APIs. I've used RHEL a fair amount in
that, but Fedora's been my laptop machine for about 9 years. So I can
attest to the impressive progress in all aspects of the distro.

I learned alot in that process, so would like to contribute back as I can.
There are many places one can jump into open source these days, but
Fedora's on my main screen, so it's the logical place. And I've long been
impressed with the Four Foundations.

Thanks for doing great work in the foundations of FOSS.

Alan

The open source variants: Mumble (VoIP only), Jitsi Videobridge
(WebRTC).

I'd suggest a Saturday (weekend for most people) around 12:00 UTC (the
middle of 24h). QA group is big and meeting time will be always painful
from someone. And selected time should be good for MVP persons from QA
group.

It's not a problem because all modern meeting services have a text
chat. Hangouts/YouTube AFAIR can transcribe live text-to-speech.

Good idea, let's do it.

You can tell from the dates there that this hasn't really been
maintained in a while. I wouldn't be surprised if it needs some
updating!

Apache OpenMeetings doesn't works without proprietary Adobe Flash in
frontend. IMHO Hangouts is better 'because we can make easy a live
stream on official Youtube channel (if he's exist, I don't know).

I think for very the short term, doing what is easist to get something to
actually happen, is what is most important. Right now there are a lot of
new people and there is already momentum, which we don't want to kill. Also
having experience with a real intro meeting will help us make good decisions
about what we should do longer term.

This one shows as having started successfully for me. I'm not 100% sure
what it does. What does the systemctl status command show?

For example, when you have wine installed, this sets up the kernel to
automatically start wine when you try to run an .exe file.

Just as a note, Fedora is usually uncomfortable with using proprietary
services for official purposes, but I think for an informal meeting
like this it should be no problem.

We could use something like http://whenisgood.net/ to figure out a time
that works for everyone who's interested.

The only other problem with a video/voice service is that some people
may not have the ability to use it, or if English is not their first
language, may be more comfortable with text. If anyone is in that
position, we can arrange an alternative session via IRC or something
similar, so please do speak up if you'd like this :)

Harmless unless you're using a multipath storage device (which you
almost certainly aren't, if your system works and you don't know what
multipathd is :>)

> [FAILED] Failed to start Dispatch Password Requests to Console

I think this is for entering decryption passphrases on boot, but again
if it's not stopping you booting, probably fine.

> See 'systemctl status systemd-ask-password-console.path' for details.

> See 'systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service' for details.

For me this one shows 'start condition failed', which means the service
is set to run only under certain conditions and none of them were met
(so it's fine, not a problem). Is that what it says for you, or
something else?

> [FAILED] Failed to mount FUSE Control File System.
> See 'systemctl status sys-fs-fuse-connections.mount' for details.

Fine unless you're using any FUSE mounts, I guess.

> [FAILED] Failed to start Set Up Additional Binary Formats.
> See 'systemctl status systemd-binfmt.service' for details.

This one shows as having started successfully for me. I'm not 100% sure
what it does. What does the systemctl status command show?

> [FAILED] Failed to start First Boot Wizard.
> See 'systemctl status systemd-firstboot.service' for details.

This is another 'condition failed' for me. As the name implies, it's
only expected to run once (if that). It's not a problem if it doesn't
run.

Generally speaking, I'd say have a look at the 'systemctl status'
commands it tells you to look at, and see what they say...
