Re: Please help us test: Fedora Media Writer 5.0

2022-05-06 Thread Jan Grulich
Alright, I believe this was very useful as we fixed countless issues today.
Thank you all who participated.

Here is latest scratch build for the weekend testers:
https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=86732788
And other builds can be found here:
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/releases

I will take a break now as today was quite exhausting :).

New scratch build: https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=86726403
Flatpak/Windows/MacOS builds here:
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/releases

This should fix small dialogs with bigger fonts, broken Fedora Server
downloads, uses exFAT for Windows drive restoration and fixes MacOS build on M1
Macs.

All the spins, take F35 as default value during download and not F36 beta
as official editions do.

Tested on a HP Omen with Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 1650 running windows 11. All
looks good. I am able to download the workstation, write it and boot with
live iso. If the write is interrupted due to flash drive eject. It
automatically re-writes.
The flash drive cleanup works fine and as expected.

would come in handy.

One of the things we're working on in the KDE SIG is eventually
auto-building all our KDE software in a COPR on a regular schedule,
with the goal of eventually producing something that we could wire up
to run through OpenQA tests using that COPR repo for precisely this
purpose. I think it would absolutely make sense if the folks
maintaining GNOME did the same thing, since they're both release
blocking desktops.

That is really not how it works, neither for GNOME nor for Fedora - its
down to small teams and individual maintainers to
make changes and decisions. For improving the QA situation between upstream
GNOME and downstream Fedora, a good
team to talk to is the GNOME release team of which both Michael and I
happen to be members.

Re: Please help us test: Fedora Media Writer 5.0

2022-05-06 Thread Kamil Paral
I tested the RPM and Flatpak version on Fedora 36 Workstation, using
Thinkpad P1 gen3 with an Intel graphics, and so far I found these issues:

"Intel 64bit" as a hardware architecture is confusing
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/451

Beta versions shouldn't be offered by default
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/452

"Delete after writing" is always on after first use
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/453

"Delete download after writing" doesn't make sense when selecting a custom
ISO
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/455

A failure in writing is reported as success (!!)
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/456

Flatpak version doesn't show notifications
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/457

FMW allows to write a corrupted image (somehow)
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/458

Unable to download an image from a custom URL
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/460

Renewing a download makes the Writing dialog stuck
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/461

Can't handle a corrupted downloaded, Retry does nothing useful
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues/462

While that's a lot of issues, many of them are already present in current
stable FMW 4.2, or they're not critical for FMW 5.0 release once F36 is
out. So, so far, I haven't found a show-stopper for FMW 5.0.

That's correct, F36 Beta had 1.4 version in the filename. The Final RCs
will not show up there until the official announcement next week. But you
can hack it manually using the guide linked in the original email in this
thread.

Update:

Here is a new scratch build adding qt6-qtsvg as a dependency:

And updated Flatpak build with updated AppStream metadata to show correct
version is on the same place:

Can you try to restore it with some partition manager and try again (to write
and restore)? And if it fails again, can you try in the old FMW. after
restoring in some other partition manager and making a new write? We didn't
really touch the code responsible for restoration so I would expect it to
behave the same as with old FMW.

Generally seems to be working as expected. But here are some notes after
testing X86_64 RPM version on F36 Beta KDE spin:
  - qt6-qtsvg was missing as reported already, so first screenshots didn't have
any graphics
  - Restore flash drive shows a failure, seems like the partition is destroyed,
but new one fails to be created (screenshot in a folder)
- Upon re-plug restore option does not appear
  - Note: Downloading beta, downloads 1.4 image, not 1.5 (as of 9:15 06.05.2022)

Downloaded and locally stored images written correctly, so no issues there.

Missing runtime dependency on qt6-qtsvg. I will fix that. Not sure about the
wrong state, I will try to reproduce.

This is weird, I'm now testing both and have same results. As the code for
download hasn't change since the old FMW version I don't think this is a
new issue in FMW 5.0.0.

Hi Yosuke, thanks for a great feedback! All those images give me HTTP 502.
Perhaps the site is down just temporarily. If it is not, and you still have
the screenshots available, could you upload them elsewhere? Or,
alternatively, report those issues individually at
https://github.com/FedoraQt/MediaWriter/issues and send the links here?
Thanks a lot!

can you upload images somewhere else? They cannot be opened.

Good catch. We forgot to update AppStream metadata.

This all will be most likely a common issue, but I'm unable to see the
screenshots and reproduce.
