[Test-Announce] L10N/I18N Test Week recap

2011-09-05 Thread Igor Pires Soares
The L10N/I18N Test Week is now over and it's time to look at whole
picture.

I'm glad to see that translators did a wonderful job testing the UI and
catching a lot of bugs. Fortunately, Anaconda is in pretty good shape
regarding i18n support as well as the overall desktop applications. On
the downside, the lack of a language selector in GDM still breaks the
LiveCD experience and libreoffice langpacks are not being pulled in by
yum install libreoffice.

I want thank everyone who helped with ideas and contributions, specially
our worldwide community for taking some time to run the tests and share
the results.

Here are the bugs filed during the test week:

[Test-Announce] Anaconda TranslationKeyboard Test Day recap

2010-09-19 Thread Igor Pires Soares
I want to thank all testers, translators, developers and users who
helped us on this test day [1].

We manage to have several bugs reported covering different languages and
their input characteristics. It is nice to have some issues detected at
this time of the release cycle since they were usually detected closer
to the release date, now translators and developers have more time to
work on them.

Here is a list of bugs filed during the Test Day:

634385 NEW - Multiple placeholders within one string in anaconda.po
635042 NEW - [minor, i18n] Cancel button is not translated in various
dialogs
634777 NEW - Firstboot does not show translations in hardware profile
screen
634499 NEW - [te_IN] character appear half in some text box with
firefox/thunderbird
634556 NEW - language support is not installed by selecting few
languages.
634680 NEW - firstboot: License Agreement isn't translated to Japanese.
634475 NEW - Anaconda is not fully translated into zh_CN
634484 NEW - Codes are displayed in anaconda GUI
634486 NEW - Descriptions are missing in partitioning screen of
anaconda
634548 NEW - [gu-IN]Some strings are untranslated in gdm
634739 ASSIGNED - terminal exit with backspace or Delete button
628241 CLOSED ERRATA - Fedora 14 Alpha, post reboot installation steps
not working

Now it is time to help on triaging and solving those bugs. In addition,
we need to keep testing in order to assure good localization and
internationalization support for everyone.

Re: L10N QA Template for F14

Hehe, these tests are created by myself with guidance from Adam, James
and Jens. But I think [2] should be renamed as l10n installation since
l10n team is in charge of the translation?

Those tests are labeled as language tests but they are also intended for
input method testing, what is more related to i18n IMHO. On the other
hand, they are more properly handled by the l10n because of their
requirements. So maybe we just need to add a link in the l10n tests
template pointing to the i18n installation tests cases along with some
additional instructions, because I'm sure that most translators are not
aware of i18n test cases.

Anyway, we still have to write a specific test
case template if we want help from the L10N members. I believe this is
worth testing because we had a lot of trouble with this issue during the
  Fedora 13 development cycle.

Yeah, recently I found a bug(#617040) in F13 GA which even prevents
install by using Arabic language. This is one of the issues which should
have been discovered under the F13 cycle.

So to improve on this, in F14 cycle, how about we hosting it as a test
day topic[3]? The translation is gonna be finished after Alpha phase, so
this test day could be someday in the beta phase targeting on language
translation and keyboard tests in anaconda for Beta candidates. Test
cases[2] could be further modified or changed for use, and then we need
to find testers both inside and outside the groups to maximum the
participation and bugs discovery on that day(s).

What do you think of this?

Hosting it as a test day is a great idea, so we can have l10n and i18n
guys together. I can send an email to the l10n list asking for
collaboration. Software translation deadline is on 2010-08-31, so we
could have the test day on 2010-09-02. There is an open slot. What do
you think?

Hurry, thanks for making it better.

Unfortunately, the i18n team doesn't have a specific test case template
to cover keyboard testings in Anaconda [1]. But we do have test cases
covering i18n installation [2]. Testing this could be trick, since it
demands different keyboards in different languages. Probably, the easier
way of doing so is to ask the L10N members for testing their keyboards
while testing the translations. I think that the existing test cases are
not executed in that way. Anyway, we still have to write a specific test

One of the wishlist items for the QA team from Fedora 13 was to better
understand the test coverage handled by the Fedora l10n and i18n teams.
Looking at the link above, and not being familiar with l10n, is there a
place that documents what the general test procedure is?

There is not a general place describing the general procedure right
now and I realize this is something we should work on in order to
clarify the procedure for all L10N teams and also for others.

I see the results wiki template, where do record test results for the
release?  Are those also on the wiki?

The initial intention for this template was to guide local teams on
their tests, so they can record their results where they feel is more
appropriate. It depends on how the L10N teams work.
