fc18 Nightly LiveCD / 20120619

2012-06-19 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

I have been anxiously awaiting for a usable nightly bouild live cd for
rawhide since it flipped and started creating the nightly builds based on
Rawhide! So far the failures have seemed to be major issues of why not.

This one seems like such a little issue! I hope that it can be resolved
before the morning and a new one being built for 20120620 ... I know that
I DO NOT have any knowledge regarding this, but the error is:

LiveCDError: Could not create loopback device files: "for i in $(seq 0
7); do mknod /dev/loop$i b 7 $i; done" exited with status 32
Is it correct for me to say that it is a little issue? Does anyone
know when the new live cd for rawhide will build?

FC17 upto FC18/ Rawhide???

2012-06-12 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

Could someone please verify, that if i updated once again up to rawhide,
that it would be worth doing so?

For the last three days in a row, I have:
1) installed 17 final,
2) updated to current packages,
3) install fedora-release-rawhide,
4) updated to full rawhide,
5) reboot,
6) nothing, but let me expound of what I mean as to nothing...

I sit and wait and wait and wait some more, all that I ever get is a mouse
pointer with a waiting symbol. I never get anywhere farther than the mouse
cursor which does move all around the screen if I play with it

I eventually after waiting for more than 5 minutes with the cursor, I
reboot and re- install FC17 final!

I love to test and use rawhide, and I accept and understand how much it is
crazy until it starts to settle down in the beta phase, but I would like a
working system!

Could someone explain or show me what is goiing on?

Does anyone know of a workaround?

No optical drive found???

2012-06-07 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

Is anyone else getting this problem in rawhide?

 No optical drive found.
K3b did not find any optical device in your system.
Solution: Make sure HAL daemon is running, it is used by K3b for finding
devices.

In using gnome-tweak-tool, I have nautilus displayed on the desktop, so I
can see that the blank cd-r is there...

this is a major issue for me, and I would like to know how to workaround
this? Is there a cli command to take everything is a certain directory and
write a data disc from it? I have no problems creating a data disc from
command line if it is possible...

Fedora has packages for gtk+ 1, 2 and 3.

Search koji for gtk3 (the rpm name for the gtk+-3* versions).

I did not know or understand that gtk3 was the version of gtk+ 3...

I can see from the download.gnome.org site, that they have gtk+-3.5.4, and

May I ask why such a huge version difference??? I have always known Fedora
to be on the top of software versions, but certainly not here on this
one

This is the reason that I am always on the move with Fedora because I want

The only reason why, would be to use it now rather than having to wait for
FC18 to stabilize a little more first. If this is such a bad idea,

What about this do you consider a bug? If you built the package that
is failing, wouldn't that imply that *you* did something incorrectly?

> I am not talking about about how much more there are in
> Python-3.3.0a2... I am talking about the architecture??? In 2.7.3,
> which was packaged by Fedora, has the correct architecture of x86_64.
> Python-3.3.0a2, which was compiled by me, has the architecture as

I'm not sure I understand your question, but I'll try to answer what I
think it is. The Fedora package for python 2.7 x86_64 installs itself
to the proper locations for x86_64. The Fedora package for python 3.2
installs itself to the proper locations for x86_64. Both in F17.

The package you built, is partially installing to /usr/local. This is
the default for most raw source on the web. *You* have to change the
configuration, usually with a setting in configure, if you want it to
install elsewhere. The Fedora packagers usually do this. Perhaps you
could download the source RPM for the python 3.2 package from Fedora
F17, and tweak it to compile your payload (the tarball for python 3.3)?

If I've missed your point completely, apologies.

That's not a crash. That's a third-party tool making an apparently
unreliable assumption about what files will be present where in a
typical Python installation.

python-libs contains $libdir/python2.7/config/Makefile . I suspect
either you don't have python-libs installed, or the script you're
running is erroneously assuming that all distros use /usr/lib even on
x86_64 installs. If yours is an x86_64 install, this is likely the
source of the problem; you should ask upstream of whatever 'gep' is to
fix their script to look in /usr/lib64 when appropriate.

I do have python-libs installed and yes it is the 64bit version, so it
makes sense that it would not be in the /usr/lib/python2.7 directory!

For the time being, I created a symbolic link from
/usr/lib64/python2.7/config to /usr/lib/python2.7 ... This may not be
the best idea or way of handling it, but it does work!

I will write the upstream version of Distutils2 to get a fix...

Rob G. Healey

You were attempting to pipe the output of `grep shell` to a program
called `/var/log/messages`. '/var/log/messages' is not executable, so
bash fails with that permission denied error. Since you're missing
the third argument to `grep`, it waits for input from stdin to search,
which is why you had to CTRL+C to get back to the shell.

Drop the pipe symbol so the command reads `grep shell
/var/log/messages` and you'll instead search /var/log/messages for
"shell". ;-)

Subject: gnome-shell desktop freezes sometimes in F17
Hi,

there are 2 situations where my gnome3 desktop sometimes freezes:

Over the last two days, I have noticed that my entire computer will freeze
up, and I have to do a hard shut-down for it to work again!

It really makes me angry! I make random saves of my work when I am working
on my computer, but it still seems to catch me before I am done...

I have not been able to determine when or what might be doing to trigger
it...

Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

1. during opening the favourites bar (move the mouse pointer to top-left)
2. during a "yum update" inside a gnome-terminal (very weird)

Sometimes I have to wait for a lot of seconds until the freezing
finishes, but in most cases I have to go to a tty window and "pkill
-HUP gnome-shell".

My video chip:

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Anybody made similar experiences?

Known, that's https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=787341 .
anaconda will blow up any time it sees an existing btrfs partition or
you try to create a new one.

Thank you for locating the bug report for me! I appreciate it very much...

It blocks final, but it would be nice if it could get fixed sooner...

I would like to see it have been given more priority considering it is a

x86_64 works beautifully

I have updated an Rawhide to /usr no problems.

I have upgraded a clean install
fully updated default F16.Xfce_32 kvm_gust
// installed and updated today, from Xfce LiveCD.

I have also done a clean install of FC16.x86_64 system...
done all of the required task to do a usrmove upgrade, rebooted, and then
upgraded using f17-usrmove repo.

I had only the problem of the libselinux dependency on glibc-2.14.90 .
This needs to be fixed!

No problems even with leaving selinux disabled...

Sincerely yours,
Rob G. Healey

dracuted the F16 initramfs
did the grub2.cfg
rebooted the move was on.
yum update from init 3
only problems an Xfce conflict,
and libselinux dep.

Rawhide/ yum issues...

2012-01-16 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings All:

I know that in the past when I had a problem with yum, I was ask to paste

I would if I could. I do not know if it is possible to capture the entire

is over 700 packages...

Is there a way to do something like:

FC17 and Dual boot...

2012-01-08 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

Back in FC16, I had a problems doing a dual boot with Win XP...

I am now at a point where I need to install Win XP with the dual boot of
FC17, but are there still problems with the dual boot? My issue was that
Fedora would not see my previous install of Win XP...

I hope that I am not being too cautious on my wording...

I am not looking for a fix or anything, but just if it is fixed or not and
if anyone else has done it successfully...

fc17 upgrade and no internet...

2012-01-05 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings All:

I upgraded my fc16 x86_64 up to fc17 this morning after the release of the
3.2.0-2 x86_64 kernel. This is just to show that I do have the latest
released packages for fc17.

After the upgrade, I could no longer get on the internet! Is this a known
issue and is there a workaround for it yet?

Is anyone else having this same issue?

FC17 won't complete loading...

2011-12-24 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings All:

>From fc16 upgraded to fc17 is not easy but it is possible...

Major issue is simply that there is not a useable Gnome Desktop once
updated and rebooted! It will load all the way to a Gnome Shell desktop,
but I can't click on anything! I can't the the right hand top hot spot
which gets me into everything.

I can't even get the left hand upper menu to work so as I may reboot.

It is as if you open a candy bar and you can see the candy, but can't pull
it out of the wrapper to enjoy it...

I am having problems with this package from fc17 x86_64, and iIt is stopping

If I download the latest package from koji and do an:

Firefox 9.0a1

Greetings:

I know that I am truly jumping the gun on this one, but I would love to know
anyways!?!

I have downloaded the tarball for this package, and it works perfectly! I

Using Adobe Square FlashPlayer 11 rc1, I can access flash data from the
internet, but no other plugins are available that work using Firefox-6.0.2

Is there anything that I can do to get these other plugins working once

answer...

fc17 and black screen of death...

2011-09-03 Thread Rob Healey
Everyone...

Every time that I update, over the last two days, to fc17/ rawhide, I get
the infamous BSOD (black screen of death)!

I get all of the way until it goes to show the desktop, and it goes into
bsod again...

Does anyone else have this same problem right now, or am I the only one...?

Is there anything that I can do after updating to rawhide that can stop this
from happening before I reboot my computer???

it there are any log files that you may need to see, please let me know?

That must be the result of grubby duplicating a menuentry stanza when
a new kernel's installed because the stanzas have "echo ..."
statements that are probably not being updated when grubby creates a
new entry.

Could you post your grub.cfg?

grub2 weirdness

2011-08-25 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

For once I am not writing regarding an issue that I am having with Fedora!
 Yeah for me...

I am just curious about one thing...

1) I loaded my box from the F16-Alpha x86_64 Desktop live cd...
2) disabled updates-testing repo
3) complete update using only Fedora
4) enabled updates-testing repo
5) complete update using both
6) install edora-release-rawhide
7) complete update using rawhide only

When I boot my computer, it shows the list of kernels that are installed and
could be used... I take the default of kernel-3.1.0-rc3.git0.0.fc17.x86_64!
Grub2 tells me that I am booting from kernel-3.0.1-3.fc16.x86_64 ...

I am just curious as of why the discrepancy?

gnome-shell is gone...

2011-08-05 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

At the beginning of this week, I loaded my computer using a F15.x86_64
livecd. I updated to current f15 (fedora, and updates).

Then I updated to F16 (fedora, updates, and updates-testing)...

Then I updated to current rawhide/ fc17...

Somewhere in this process, I lost gnome-shell...

Could anyone possibly tell me how to get it back??? If there are any log
files that I may share with you to help debug this situation, please let me
know?

Re: Google Earth

2011-07-20 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

I chose not to reply to anyone in particular because it was not necessary to
do so on this topic...

It sure appears as if there is a huge problem regarding 64bit Google Earth?

Since it is advertised on http://earth.google.com as a 64bit Fedora/
OpenSuse download file, I believe that I should not have to install a lot of
i686 packages just to install and use Google Earth! It is kind of a
principle to me not to have to install any i686 packages on my 64bit
computer system...

I have tried to find a mailing list for trying to resolve this problem with
Google itself, but can't find a development mailing list for Google Earth...

Does anyone have the availability to find and writing to the Google Earth
list in order to get this fixed?

I, too, have the need and want to use Google Earth 64bit, but I can't seem
to use it

btrfs as default fs...

2011-07-16 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

About two months ago, I loaded my system from a Fedora15 dvd, and I had
chosen btrfs as the installed filesystem...

I liked how it could make a restore point before making big changes to the
system! I think it is awesome that Fedora can now have this
functionality...

Then I had some problems with my update up to fc16, and had to re- install
FC15...

This time, I forgot to choose btrfs ! I do not want to have to level my
system just to have btrfs once again!

Is there any timeline for when fc16's filesystem will be defaulted to btrfs
and become the primary file system? When is the forced upgrade to btrfs
coming???

lan network mapping...

2011-07-15 Thread Rob Healey
Greetings:

I would like to explain what I am trying to do, and then see if there is a
solution to my issue?

I have a wireless print server in my lan, and it has a specific ip address,
something like 192.168.0.10, 192.168.1.10, 172.16.0.10 ...

I know that I changed it once before, and didn't need it for a long time,
and now I do again! I do not remember what it's software set ip address
was...

I know my username, and password is to the printer server, but I can access
and change the ip address until I can find what it is?

Is there any software out there that can scan my lan, and report what ip
address and device name that is on the network?

I know that this is kind of a loaded problem, but I need to be able to use
my print server once again?

fc16 livecd and microcode_ctl...

2011-06-29 Thread Rob Healey
Dear Adam:

I am very grateful for the information that you sent to me about the bug
tracker report! It shows me that I am not the only one having this problem!

>From the bug tracker, it listed the close date of 2011-June-29. How long do
you think it might take to filter down to the package list for rawhide? If
it is soon, then I will wait and not use the workaround...

If it is going to take a while, then I might update and use the workaround
until it is fixed ...

Sincerely yours,

I don't know. The workaround would be to disable that service, though
I'm not sure if you can manage that from a live CD. Interactive boot is
probably broken these days, I don't know if systemd implements anything
like it.

The bug here probably isn't really that microcode_ctl fails, but that
the failure is fatal to boot - it shouldn't be. Microcode updating
should be entirely optional and if it fails, boot should just continue.
It's entirely possible this is what happens in F15, if you look at it
carefully. Looks like this is filed as
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=715118 .

Ah - which also gives a hint to avoid it: blacklist the 'microcode'
module. That should be possible from the bootloader, I think.

fc16 livecd Desktop x86_64

2011-06-28 Thread Rob Healey
Dear Adam:

I don't know if it boots, but hey, grab it and try it =). The gdm bug
that several of us on Rawhide are hitting may rear its head -
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=716365 - in that case, try
booting to runlevel 3, logging in as 'liveuser' (no password), and
running startx.
