Fedora 14 x86_64 on new Macbook AIR - mostly success

2010-11-05 Thread Jan Wildeboer
Just a short report:

- Dualboot setup with rEFIt
- Default install with nomodeset to avoid broken graphics (seems nv
driver doesn't like the M320 in the MBA)
- Using USB Ethernet adaptor to have network - added rpmfusion
- Installed kmod-wl (for the wireless card)
- Installed kmod-nvidia
- ran nvidia-xconfig as root

What works:

- Suspend/resume, no prob
- Webcam Just Works (tested with cheese)
- network works

What fails (partly)

- no sound
- external monitor via Minidisplayport doesn't work OOTB, needs fiddling
with nvidia tool
- Touchpad options are missing, only basic functions (no right-click, no
multi-touch)

So I would give it a 90% success ATM. Will file BZs on the #fails

Did you play around with pulseaudio assignment with pavucontrol to try
to get it working?

Does
aplay -l
show your sound device properly. That is, did alsa recognize your
sound device?

Did you test it with the open nouveau driver at all?

(default wouldn't use nv, it would use nouveau. So that's where he
tested nouveau.)

Had this problem with my MacBookPro7,1 - likely the Air has very similar
(if not the same) sound hadware. To get my machine to make sound, I had
to:

1) Force snd_hda_intel to detect the machine as a macbookpro:
  [wwo...@samus ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
  options snd_hda_intel model=mbp55
2) Turn up the mixer volumes (and save them):
  alsamixer -c0
  sudo alsactl store 0

I have a bug open about this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=625188

 - external monitor via Minidisplayport doesn't work OOTB, needs fiddling
 with nvidia tool

This doesn't work in nouveau either - I suspect they've changed
something about how the mini-DP works in recent models..

 - Touchpad options are missing, only basic functions (no right-click, no
 multi-touch)

Weird - works fine on my MacBook Pro. Two-finger click for right-click,
three-finger for middle. Two-finger scrolling works horiz/vert (I might
have had to go into the Mouse prefs to turn that on).

Is the bcm5974 module loaded? It's possible they changed the USB product
ID and yours isn't getting claimed by the right driver..
