Also note one point was that some of use a different (and newer)
version of latex ... so why force a particular and older one ? And
besides, if one wants one of those latex-dependent reports just install
latex ...

I'd much prefer to think of this feature more like a browser plugin -
useful, functional nice if you want it .. but not required.

Not to forget Sweave: R offers the possibility to create 'dynamic'
statistical reports typeset with LaTeX (very nice feature!) so
"bundeling" absolutely makes sense from my point of view...

You could provide your own stub rpm the provided it. Unfortunately, looks
like R-devel currently requires tetex-latex, that should get fixed.

R uses latex for documentation. Not sure if there is a sensible split that
would make it optional. It should be able to require tex(latex) I believe for
generic latex support.

Is there any way to decouple the bulk of R from requiring texlive [1]?
It seems bizarre that a stats package has a deep coupling with a
typesetting language .. ;-)

is there any way to make an R-reports or R-docs package to at least
isolate this coupling ?

[1] Some of us are using different tex than the fedora texlive (at
least on f13 the texlive is too out of date (missing biblatex for example).

Yes, a new poppler landed recently, and rebuilds are proceeding. One of
those just done recently was texlive.

There is no "fedora 14 rawhide". Rawhide currently is Fedora 15
development. The broken dependencies in there are reported with the daily
"rawhide report".
