Fedora never shipped this helper. We didn't need it, and it was suid and crazy. > The original bug[1] seems to have the status "Fix Released" but after > reading the discussion on the bug I'd really avoid installing their > packages. > > If the Fedora package doesn't work for you let's make it work. > > [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/calibre/+bug/885027 > or LWN coverage at https://lwn.net/Articles/465311/ yes, all old history. it was also fixed upstream after his outcry. kevin signature.asc Description: PGP signature -- test mailing list test@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test

It got me curious, so I tried throwing in a quick F20 with the rpm for calibre. That also successfully re-encoded a pdf, so my (uneducated) guess is that it has something to do with apress' format. -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 -- test mailing list test@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test

Did they fix the serious security problems in the upstream-provided packages? They used to install some exploitable helper program suid root. The Fedora package (and most other distros') stripped that binary and made Calibre use a more secure mechanism. The original bug[1] seems to have the status "Fix Released" but after reading the discussion on the bug I'd really avoid installing their packages. If the Fedora package doesn't work for you let's make it work. Also, for what it's worth, apparently, if you buy an apress book in any format, you can then download another format. In addition, it seems as if their pdfs prior to 2010 were password protected. So, if these are older, and you feel like testing, it might even be worthwhile to download the pdfs again and see if that works. -- Scott Robbins PGP keyID EB3467D6 ( 1B48 077D 66F6 9DB0 FDC2 A409 FA54 EB34 67D6 ) gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys EB3467D6 -- test mailing list test@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/test
