That feels too brittle to me ... I mean its only logging after all

Ask the experts, not me.

vt1 hung endlessly, with a black screen once the daemons had finally all timed
out, and on vt2+, it was impossible to log in. After typing the password, the
system would hang, and then a 60 second timeout would be noted, and hence, no
login was possible. I was forced to alt-SysRq-re to kill the remaining daemons,
I presume, and then I noticed on vt1 that graphical login was taking place, but
on a ro system, hence config files could not be written to, hence each in turn
generating an error. It was a total disaster and took nearly 30 minutes on an
Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

what debugging options are available when f15 no longer starts?

Depends on when the start stops.

You may try serial console, dracut rdshell...

thank you. actually, while i was writing the above post, the system
started, after ~6m45s. after disabling abrtd, akmods and some other md
related daemon, the system returned to a 45s boot time but only entered text
mode, and seems to be very slow on anything. attempts to startx failed.
somebody else reported something similar on another thread. it was triggered
too by the today 'yum update'. reboot/poweroff time is still very long.

Boot rescue mode and downgrade today's updates. I could not determine
exactly which update caused the problem. I downgraded gcc, iproute,
rsyslog, libX11 and their dependencies in order to get my system booting
again.

In my case it was the rsyslog package. Karma filled as well as bug report.
Kind regards

Thanks a million!

yum downgrade rsyslog

cured it. I am back using F15 again.
