I'm not sure I understand your problem but I did have some touchpad issues before and was able to get desired results from xinput. My problem was I couldn't turn the touchpad off because kwin wasn't picking up synaptic. xinput allows you to turn off or on just about anything detected by X. I probably shouldn't have used dmesg to describe it. It's the kernel message log. There's a dmesg command to view it and there used to be a /var/log/dmesg file.
