Hi Kevin,

If there is some information (log files, etc) that would be useful, do
let me know. I have been digging at certain files without any useful
information - but I could very easily be looking at the wrong places .. :)

Cheers.

In this thread context, you probably think of the "GTK+ 3".

So far, I've only given the x86_64.fc19 version a try.

- xfce4-terminals now seem to be saved and restored correctly.

- Same issues with gnome as before. E.g. ghex, gedit get restored on
last active workspace before log-out (The workspace the log-out was
performed), instead of the workspace they were placed on before log-out.

- No issues with firefox and thunderbird.

definitely not. Thunar - not sure yet. But, it seems to mostly start.

The Mozilla apps (Firefox, Thunderbird) save their own sessions. They
should start up where you left off, unless you've customized either
application.

Although, as I'm writing this, I realized that when you said "restored",
I'm not quite sure if you mean restored upon login, or restored upon

Thanks for looking in to this Kevin! Cheers.

Xfce stopped remembering sessions over a reboot some time ago.
When it was remembering sessions it didn't remember correctly.
Sessions were "restored" to the wrong workspace and the wrong
state.

Unless the apps can be restored correctly, I prefer to restart them
myself.

This is bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1026599

It's sadly known upstream since the Terminal->xfce4-terminal rework. ;(

Recently someone did bisect it and found the exact commit where it
started breaking, so hopefully that means it might get fixed soon.

Some more details after some experiments with newly created, local
accounts on f19 and f20:

- instead of getting restored at their former positions, xfce-terminals
always pop up on random positions on "workspace 1"

- gnome-terminals don't seem to be saved at all and do not get restored.
They vanish.

- firefox and thunderbird do get restored correctly.

From this, I conclude, xfce-terminal and gnome-terminal are both broken
in different ways.

Yes, I am. Both under F19 and F20!

How can I troubleshoot this and what information should I provide
for getting to the root of this?

I have no idea. I've been playing with various of the "usual

so far.

Odd. I do not see this here (with rawhide), nor have I gotten any bugs
on it. ;(

So, can you folks pinpoint about when it started doing that?
(perhaps it's an update that caused it?)

Unfortunately, no.

All I can say, *automatic session* saving already was flakey during
f17/f18, but since having upgraded to f19 it almost never works.
Also, the symptoms I am observing seem not consistent and
non-systematic/non-deterministic.

I usually work with 6 virtual workspaces and use "automatic session
saving", typically with many terminals (gnome-terminal and
xfce-terminal) and very few GUI apps (e.g. thunderbird, firefox,
nautilus, vlc) spread across these virtual workspaces.
Also, I often "su" to other accounts in some of these terminals and
often ssh'ed into other machines inside of these terminals. Furthermore,
I am using nfs/yp/automounted homes.

When re-loggin in,
- sometimes, *all* "saved apps" appear on virtual "workspace 1",
plastered on top of each other.

- sometimes, I end up with an empty workspace.
- sometimes, some GUI-apps seem to be restored, but the terminals aren't.
- on one machine

My guess would, be there are several issues interacting, with xfce only
being one part of the game. SELinux (I have been observing sealerts
referring to /home/ with homes being shared between f19 and f20),
systemd and something related to the GPU (kernel or x-server) definitely
are involved on occasion.

If you pull up prefs-> sessions and startup what do you have checked
there?

X Automatically save session on logout
X Prompt on logout

In ->Advanced:
X Launch Gnome Services

Everything else is unchecked.

[That's part of what I was referring to as "usual suspects" - I have
been playing with these settings, but ... no deterministic improvements,
so far.]

If you go to the "Session" tab and click 'save session' does the
~/.cache/session* files get updated?

Yes, it does.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your response.

I think this started happening few (maximum - one week) days back. At
least, that's when I started noticing. I usually just suspend my laptop.
But, when suspend started acting up (another thread on test), I noticed
this issue! :)

In my case, I usually have "Prompt on logout" checked. On the logout
prompt, the "Save Sessions" options has always been checked. But
changing these options seems to have effect based on my testing before I
posted my first message to the list.

When I click on "Save Sessions", it does update the files. Restarting
the system seems to load **most** programs correctly. Liferea, for
example, although open at the time of clicking "Save session", does not
start.

Restarting with the manually saved sessions seems to work (with the
exception of liferea). When I restarted the system two times after
moving the (manual) *session* files to some junk folder (still under
~/.cache/sessions), restores the session - again with the exception of
liferea. Thunderbird, Firefox, Thunar open fine.

Will any other information be helpful on this (potential) issue?

Thanks again! :)
