i'm also in the frame for this sort of information -- the ctan
catalogue is sorely lacking music software info. obviously, i have to
record daniel as the "author" of musi[cx]tex (marked "inactive" :-( ),
but while i see occasional patches going past, i'm not aware of anyone
actually "maintaining" the software.

pmx is another important item that doesn't have a catalogue entry.

and while it's still there, i ought to write something about musictex
(if only to make clear it's not a good idea to go for it).

Not directly. There is a home page for MusiXTeX and PMX at:

  http://icking-music-archive.org/

You'll find there a pointer to an excellent mailing list and a lot of
further information.

Download the Fortran source from:

 http://icking-music-archive.org/software/indexmt6.html

The link is labeled "Linux tarball".

  tar -xvzf pmx_2.5.1.orig.tar.gz
  cd pmx-2.5.1/
  make (This creates the documentation)
  cd src

To create teh binary change in Makefile the lines beginning with
"pmxab:" and "scor2prt:"

 --
pmxab: pmxab.for
cp pmxab.for pmxab.f
f2c pmxab.f
gcc pmxab.c -o pmxab -lf2c -lm

scor2prt: scor2prt.for
cp scor2prt.for scor2prt.f
f2c scor2prt.f
gcc scor2prt.c -o scor2prt -lf2c -lm
 --

Then:

make
cp pmx pmxab scor2prt /usr/local/bin/pmx
chmod 0755 /usr/local/bin/pmx /usr/local/bin/scor2prt /usr/local/bin/pmxab

Then copy:
pmx-2.5.1/tex/pmx.tex to /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/pmx/pmx.tex

Then:
texhash

Then create a test file "w1.pmx" with:

%-%

   22 4 44 40 0
   11 20 0.07

bt
./
e43 d e f | g43 a f g | e43 d e f | g43 a f g /
c44 d e f | g44 a b c | c44 d e f | g44 a b c /
%-%

Then:

pmx w1.pmx
xdvi w1.dvi

Voila

[TeX-music] MusiXTeX authors and other questions

2004-07-22 Thread Dave Phillips
Greetings:
I've been writing a greatly revised chapter on notation software for
the 2nd edition of my book, and I've completed the profile of MusiXTeX
but I don't have a list of recent and current maintainers. Can someone
direct me to that information ?

Also, does a CVS exist for MusiXTeX ? What about PMX ? I've had some
problems with PMX, but I'm still studying how it works and will
hopefully be able to resolve my difficulties on my own. Hopefully... ;)

Finally, I was able to build Mux2D for Qt 3.2.2, and I wondered
whether a newer version was available anywhere. CVS maybe ?

 TIA!
Best regards,
Dave Phillips

Pardon the cross-listing but since questions about copyright come up
frequently on this list, I thought I'd direct your attention to this:
Copyright Term and the Public Domain in the United States
http://www.copyright.cornell.edu/training/Hirtle_Public_Domain.htm
A reference chart to help you to determine the copyright status of a given

The Werner Icking Archive contains a sub-page dedicated to copyright
issues, see http://icking-music-archive.org/copyright.html. I'm very
much interested in receiving proposals for additional stuff for that page.

I'm not positive anymore, but I think it was Muffat. At any rate, the
figured bass line was up in the concertino, rather than on the bottom line
with the ripieno group, where PMX would normally look for it. That line was
the regular basso. I should probably add, though, that this was a "modern"
edition and not a facsimile or original source.<

Just to clarify things for those who aren't familiar with Pasquini's figured
bass pieces, the thing that really distinguishes them is that there is
nothing else there except one or two figured bass lines. They all come from
one 1703 manuscript which has been reproduced in facsimile as Volume 8 of
the series "17th Century Keyboard Music" by Garland with an introduction by
Alexander Silbiger. As a result of this thread I pulled my copy off the
shelf and re-read the introduction. The MS has 344 pages of which fully 277
are devoted to the figured-bass pieces. Scholars have argued ad nauseum
about their intent: teaching pieces? accompaniments to lost solo lines? or
stand-alone musical works? Silbiger goes with door #3.

As to whether there are other works like this, Silbiger says "Collections of
such pieces are by no means rare; most date from the late 17th and early
18th centuries, and all share certain common features." Then he gives a
reference to "Vol. 13 of this set" without saying who the other composer was
or what the common features are.

Re: [TeX-music] Two figured bass line in PMX

2004-07-22 Thread Luigi Cataldi
Thank you very much Don!
I'll wait for this function.
My interest for those strange pieces is essentially musicological: the
violin sonata influence on the keyboard music after Corelli. As far I
know there are no other works of this kind. But I think that it's
possible to find two figured bass line in works for double choir, like
the "Dixit Dominus" RV594 by Vivaldi (if I remember well).
About your proposal to play togeter, I should be happy, but it's just a
dream for me: I play (if we can say to play in this case) keyboard in an
horrible manner :-(

Have a nice time!

bass? Sometime in the last decade I set out to typeset some of them, and I
made a special version of PMX to do it. I did get the process working but
never got very far with the typesetting. I can't think of any good way to do
it in the current PMX. If you have some patience, I'll try to find the old
special version and integrate the capability into modern PMX. It'll be a
good spare-time project for my long-awaited vacation starting this Thursday,
most of which I'll spend playing harpsichord and visiting old friends at the
International Baroque Institute at Longy in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Then
when you finish the typesetting, we can get together and play them :-)

This is only true if the adaptation included creative work. If you have the
original and do not adopt all Vretblad adaptations , it cannot be proven that
you have plagiarised...

Otherwise it will be copyrighted until year-of-death + 70 years.
