Without any fortran knowledge nor programming experience I'm surprised with the 64K size limit of _string_ variables (or does fortran really have a _character_ datatype having size expandable up til 64K?). Just a thought: could string arrays come in as a replacement of 'flat' string variables? Ie. fill up an array item up til the 64K and then go on the next array item.
