There are a few examples p.17-18 of
https://www.areditions.com/ac/StyleGuide.pdf but perhaps they are too obvious.

Jean-Pierre, even if it doesn't answer all the questions, the link is very
interesting, providing as it does a list of music editing guidelines from a
very respected music publisher. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks. To be more precise: p.13 of the pdf = page labelled 12.

I would be offended with the corresponding situation with rests.

Yes, even in 3/4 time I was taught never to use half-note rests.

I've adopted the tied-quarters form and I agree that it's
easier to read.

Thanks.

Re: [Tex-music] music typesetting question

2014-10-29 Thread Don Simons
The question here is part of the larger, more basic question What are the
rules determining when the notes and rests in a bar need to be subdivided if
it were not otherwise necessary? So far in this discussion I haven't seen
any hints of a supportable answer, and I sure don't know the answer. I did
look in Read, and found some discussion about using beaming to clarify some
aspects of metrical subdivisions. But beyond that I didn't see much on this
subject.

I'm attaching a page on rests typeset by our patriarch Werner Icking. He
does give a reference to a book by Chlapik, which I don't have. But while
the example implicitly touches on how measures should be visually
subdivided, it doesn't list any rules either. If anyone does have Chlapik
and can read German, perhaps he could give us a report on whether it
addresses the basic question.

[Tex-music] music typesetting question

2014-10-28 Thread Bob Tennent

I'm setting a piece in 2/2 meter. One part consists
essentially of quarter notes always off the beat. Is it
acceptable to typeset this as in the following:

\itieu0o\ca o | \ttie0\ca o\qa o\qa o\qa o\itieu0o\ca o | \ttie0\ca o ...

where the | indicates a barline.

The reason I ask is that I've seen the same material set as
follows:

\itieu0o\ca o | \ttie0\ca o\qa o\itieu0o\ca o\ttie0\ca o\qa o\itieu0o\ca o |
\ttie0\ca o ...

The difference is that the central quarter note has been
broken up into tied eighth notes, presumably because the
second one is on the second beat of the 2/2 measure.

There doesn't seem to be the same reluctance to carry half
notes across the beat.

You will have all the classical composers on your side if
you do, but maybe some primary school music teachers
might be offended.

As an orchestra violist I have often seen things like this.

Which score or part ?

A complete MusiXTeX example will make things easier.
