According to my music theory book, short-beam notation is also usable with quarter notes and pointed notes. Also, it is necessary to provide "lower" short-beams for whole notes in multi-voice scores. And I don't think \steml and \stemn improve on just \stemlength if examples are provided in musixdoc.
