[Texascavers] Indian Creek Cave

2007-08-09 Thread Geary Schindel
Folks,

I understand that the city of San Antonio recently purchased an easement
to approximately 15,000 acres of property adjacent to Indian Creek Cave
property. I've talked to Dolph's lawyer off and on for a couple of
years about getting access for scientific purposes. We are now tracer
testing in Kinney County and will move into Uvalde County next year.
Indian Creek is a prime candidate for an injection site.

I would request that folks not contact Dolph or his land managers so it
doesn't create any undo issues for access at this time.

As I obtain more information, I'll let folks know.

Subject: [Texascavers] correction

I hastily posted something again.

Dolph Briscoe Jr. is apparently still alive. It was his wife that
passed away.

I apologize.

Let me re-phrase the question. Has anybody been in Indian Creek Cave
in the last 10 years? or even seen the entrance?

Has anybody ever offered to buy the entrance?or purchase an easement
other than the one that the government has.

Who keeps the key? the Briscoes, I assume.

David

[Texascavers] Lincoln Caverns in FSC - 38 Years Old Today

2007-08-09 Thread Lee H. Skinner
It was on August 9, 1969 that Dennis Engle, Lee Skinner, Elbert Bassham
and Chuck Ridpath made the big breakthrough from the New Section into
Lincoln Caverns, culminating 7 years of digging from Gypsum Passage that
started in 1962. The breakthrough followed 10 consecutive weekends of
digging 8 hours each on Saturday and Sunday of each weekend, but
sleeping outside the cave on each Saturday night. During those 7 years
of digging, many Southwestern Cavers contributed to the dig including
Robbie Babb, Pete Lindsley, Donald Davis, John Corcoran and dozens of
others too numerous to mention. The large beautifully decorated
borehole found that day included the best decorations found so far in
New Mexico's Fort Stanton Cave and included the areas of Engle's Hill,
Skinner's Pass, Elbert's Alley and Chuck's Dome.

[Texascavers] Labor Day Trip - Deep and Punkin Cave

2007-08-09 Thread Geary Schindel
Folks,

Since the Bustamante Trip didn't work out this year, there will be a
trip to the Deep and Punkin Nature Preserve over the Labor Day weekend.
This is Friday, August 31 through Monday, September 3. Activities for
the weekend will include trips into Deep Cave and as well as watching
the bat flight at Punkin Cave. In addition, I'm sure there will be
plenty of sloth, gluttony, and buffoonery to keep people amused. We
will have some work activities on the property that will be performed by
those who feel like working. We're looking at cutting the grass and cat
claw, working on the back deck project, cutting cedar on and along the
property line, building a landing strip and boat dock, etc. We can also
provide trip leader training for those who are interested.

The management plan limits the total number of folks so participation
will be limited. Therefore, if you would like to attend, please email
me so I can put your name on the list. I'll add names until we reach
the maximum number for the property. However, if you have signed up in
the past, but didn't show up or call to cancel, your name will be added
to the bottom of the list.

The Deep and Punkin Nature Preserve is owned by the Texas Cave
Management Association. The preserve covers 225 acres in southwestern
Edwards County and is located about 35 miles west of Rock Springs and
about 30 miles north of Del Rio in Carta Valley. There is a small cabin
on the property along with some nice camping sites. It is relatively
close to Lake Amsted and Devils River State Natural Area. There is a
$5 donation per person requested to help maintain the property.

If you would like further information, please email me.

Property Manager

[Texascavers] EarthTimes.org: Belgian caver rescued from 600 metres underground in Spain

2007-08-09 Thread CaverArch
Pamplona, Spain - A Belgian cave researcher was Wednesday rescued from a
cave located at a depth of 600 metres underground in the Pyrenees on the
border
between Spain and France, Spanish police said. Anette Van Houtte, 49, who had
entered the cave with several other scientists, had been stuck in the cave
for four days after suffering a foot injury.

Nearly 100 rescuers from both sides of the border participated in the risky
rescue operation, transporting Van Houtte for four kilometres through narrow
tunnels. She was reported to be in relatively good health.

Re: [Texascavers] RE: Gory, Gory, what a hell of a way to die (Blood Upon the Risers)

2007-08-09 Thread Rod Goke
When I was in grade school, there was another version of this song which was
neither religious nor political. I've
forgotten (or never completely learned) most of the words, but I recall the
chorus beginning with

 Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Teacher hit me with a ruler!
 . . .

and the first verse beginning with

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school:
 . . .

This version was much more popular among schoolchildren than was the official
version that Vivian posted. Does anyone
remember its lyrics? Of course, times have changed, and any kid caught sing
that version in school now would probably be
charged with making terroristic threats.

Just to clear this up for our foreign born readers-
The song from which all these Gory Gory lyrics are derived is The Battle Hymn
of the Republic circa the US civil war.

Yes it's religious. Yes it's political.
It's the unofficial anthem of the Republican Party.

 It goes like this:

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
 He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
 His truth is marching on.

 (Chorus)
 Glory, glory, hallelujah!
 Glory, glory, hallelujah!
 Glory, glory, hallelujah!
 His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
 They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
 His day is marching on.

 Chorus

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
 As ye deal with my condemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with His heel,
 Since God is marching on.

 Chorus

 He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
 Our God is marching on.

 Chorus

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
 While God is marching on.

 Chorus

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
 Our God is marching on.

 Chorus

Yeah - I'd like the low sodium tour, please! :-)

Alternately, I wonder what it would take to get a job there or otherwise
intern.
Got that explosives permit

I assume this is their facility in Hockley, Texas, which is just

I know of 2 or 3 cavers who have taken this tour and they said it was

I would like to do this someday.
