[Texascavers] Texs Cavers Reunion

2007-10-02 Thread Allan Cobb
Greetings Y'all,

It is time for another update on the 30th Annual Texas Cavers Reunion on the
weekend of October 19-21. TCR will be held at Paradise Canyon on the scenic
Medina River just outside of San Antonio. TCR welcomes all cavers young and
old, new or experienced. Well behaved children and dogs are also welcome.
Reunions of old-time cavers from many different grottos are encouraged to
attend to see your old friends and see how they have (or haven't) changed. For
more information and directions to the site, visit www.oztotl.com/tcr.

Registration will open sometime on Friday afternoon and run into the night.
Registration will reopen on Saturday morning. Please stop by registration to
sign the release waiver, pay your registraiton fees, and renew (or join) the
TSA. The fees are $25 for adults, $15 for children, and $15 for Senior Cavers
(cavers who started caving in Texas 40 or more years ago). The maximum charge
for a family is capped at $80.

On Friday night, the Bexar Grotto is replacing their famous Fish Fry with the
soon-to-be-famous Spaghetti Dinner. Drop by on Friday night for spaghetti and
meatballs and all the trimmings. Reservations are not require but donations
will be accepted.

On Saturday morning, the TCMA will be changing their traditional Sunday Morning
Breakfast to the new and improved Saturday Morning Breakfast. Coffee will
available starting about 8:30 and breakfast tacos will be served starting about
9. Donations will go to the TCMA's Cave Aquisition Fund that is used to buy
caves.

Saturday during the day will be filled with fun and frolicing,
speleocompetitions, shopping, cavorting, good times, and visiting with new and
old friends. There will also be opportunities to canoe or kayak on the Medina
River. If you have a boat and want to play, bring it along.

Saturday evening will be the Big Feed. This year, the meal will be a
Mexican-style extraganza. Bring your own plate, utensils, and cup as usual.
The food will be good so remember to bring your apetite.

Following the Big Feed will be the presentation of awards from the
speleocontests and door prizes. Due to various circumstances, there will not a
band this year so we encourage people to bring their own musical instruments
for improptu music sessions. We will have several large fires (not a single
LARGE fire like last year!) for socializing as well as the fire by the hot tub
and suana.

Sunday morning at 9:30, the Texas Cave Management Association will have its
members meeting. Immediately following the TCMA meeting, the Texas
Speleological Association will have its meeting starting at about 10:30. The
exact locations of the meeting will be announced during TCR but will likely be
"on the grassy knoll."

I hope to see y'all there!
Allan

Re: [Texascavers] hitting reply

2007-10-02 Thread Alex Sproul

A lot of folks are missing the point.  There are actually two problems at work
here.  (Actually, just one: that people use e-mail without understanding how
it works...)

The first problem is the one Mark Minton succinctly covered.  Every mail
client has the option of automatically quoting the entire message being
replied to.  This is almost never appropriate, and on this point I agree with
Mr. Sleazel -- just stop it!  Find that option and turn it off.  Manually copy and
quote only the portion needed for your reply to make sense (which is usually
very little -- the quoting, I mean, not your reply...); this forces you to consider
how necessary the quoting really is.

The second problem is caused by people who haven't figured out how to
turn off auto-quoting AND who receive their mail lists in digest form.
Digested messages are a single message containing all of the messages
sent to the list in a 24 hour period, intended to minimize the mailbox clutter
to one Texascavers per day.  Digests are handled and displayed very
differently by different mail clients, so there's no common solution, other
than paying attention.

The problem comes when someone hits Reply to *the Digest* rather than to
an individual message within it.  Then, you get a message with a subject like
"

Subject: texascavers Digest 2 Oct 2007 04:29:11 - Issue 392," and
below the reply will be quoted the _entire_ previous digest, including ALL
posts from ALL members on ALL topics.  If yesterday was a verbose day,
this can make for a rather large scrolling annoyance.  If several idiots do this
on the same day, a message in the megabyte range hits everybody's
mailbox.

See that little word on the top bar of your mailer that says Help?  Click it
sometime; you'll find it very interesting reading.
