[Texascavers] FW: Karst Information Portal
Subject: Karst Information Portal Folks, I don't know if you've had a chance to check out the new Karst Information Portal sponsored by USF and NCKRI (and others) but you should check it out and register. It is developing momentum and I think will be (is) a great asset to the karst community including researchers, land and cave managers, consultants, students, cavers, the public, etc. I understand that USF is highly committed to the project and has hired a person to specifically manage the information site. It is very much like a coop, the more folks that are involved, the better the site will be for everyone. See the link below. http://www.karstportal.org/public/index.cfm Geary Schindel

[Texascavers] OT - the new diesel Cherokee - part 3
In the November issue of Diesel Power magazine is a detailed article on the new diesel Cherokee. It provides some of the specs that I was unable to dig up. The testers gave it the thumbs up, but indicated they only got 17 mpg on the city. There is also a picture of a huge Chevrolet 4x4 called the TopKick. It is as big as the MXT. Here it is: http://images.traderonline.com/img/4/dealer/4489584/89707590_6.jpg The rear tires are called super singles, on the industrial size rigs. That rig is $ 80,000. I believe a company called Monroe Trucks sells it. While those big rigs look like a lot of fun, there are a lot of narrow Jeep size trails in the Sierra Madres that it won't go. However, it should handle the big muddy logging roads with ease, and cross some of the streams with little excitement. Does anybody have any river fording stories in the Sierra Madres?Rio Purificacion?Or the Rio Tigre? or something else. RE: [Texascavers] We took a reporter caving in Travis County
Hi Louise: Barry Beck's dog and I tried to fit in the same corkscrew in Midnight - - - - - - You sure that was not Crooked Thumb and Woola? I'm quite sure you were on the same rainy Triangle weekend trip where the two dogs surprised some of the locals - . Thumb was trained to wait until I was positioned in a chimney and then to climb up over me. Woola, ever the follower, was typically close behind. Ahead I heard: G-- D---!! There's a DOG in here!! H -ly Sht!! Here comes another one!! Turned out it was some friends of Doc whats-his-name, the owner. That was also the same trip where Everege showed up with 2 cases of $1 bottles of remainder wine from his local discount emporium. We had a nose-in truck roundup at the triangle, sitting on the hoods, sheltered by a motley assortment of tarps. I remember that you showed up in your V W to join the festivities, and later crawled under Tortuga for a dry spot to sleep ---.. Hi DD, Sounds like the right trip. You're right.I think it was Woola who tried to share the corkscrew with me. It's been 30 years, after all, so my memory of the incidenttends to scopeout the general picture, rather than the particulars. BTW, it was Doc Harding.Ah...the good ol' days. [Texascavers] OT - a geologic question
Disclaimer: This e-mail was written under the influence of 2 table-spoons of NyQuil, and one benzocaine throat lozenge ) No other mind enhancement drugs, except maybe caffeine contributed to this. Occasionally I see cartoon drawings of Hell showing stalagmites and stalactites. I would like to analyze this phenomenon from the perspective of someone who loves speleothems. Are these limestone formations?or are they melted igneous rock? The people in these cartoons are usually sweating, but they are still alive, so the temperature must me around 140 degrees. Can limestone form stalactites under these conditions? There is no water in Hell, right? What purpose would having speleothems serve in Hell? Are they for decoration?Does any environment full of speleothems make your visitation there more miserable? I would deduce there is no limestone in Hell, therefore there are no calcium-carbonate spelethems. Certainly this description of Hell, is not a lava tube. It is a big room full of speleothems. Is there such a void near the mantle, where speleothems grow and lava bubbles up? Do cavers support the idea of having artwork describing Hell as a cave? This would tend to associate cavers with demonic people. I sometimes feel that non-cavers think cavers have some sort of connection to the dark underworld. I think most of the people that believe in a speleo-version of Hell, take the side that Hell is very deep in the crust of the earth, so that would rule out any limestone caves. I assume the devil has no control of the the growth of speleothems in his chambers. But he seems to be taking good care of them. So he can't be all bad, right? I hope I will never learn the answer to this question.
