[Texascavers] Celebrating 20 years of Colorado Bend SP Project - Nov 10th and 11th
It has been 20 years of Colorado Bend SP Project, and this weekend we are going to celebrate - by caving and getting dirty all around - the milestone of the project. By my current flawed count, we have 223 caves in the park and 95 karst features - which comes out to be about a cave every 20 acres. So to all the past contributors to the project, thanks for all the efforts. To the current and future contributors, we know that a number of caves hasn't been found - we will have more than 300 total caves in the park before this project is complete. This upcoming weekend (November 10th and 11th) is another Colorado Bend SP trip and with the weather being as great as it looks (high of 80, low of 58), will be staying at the caver's camp, which is first right behind the sign enouncing entry into the park. Food will be served on Saturday night courtesy of friends of park, park itself, and some of us. So come out and enjoy, and bring swimming trunks and a towel just in case, Butch Fralia, Mark Gee, Keith Heuss, and Rafal Kedzierski _ Boo! Scare away worms, viruses and so much more! [Texascavers] Comet Pics and Mammoth Cave
We have been watching Comet Holmes for the past 10 days. Over the weekend everyone at the Mammoth Cave Restoration Camp had an opportunity to see and admire the comet. There were many oohs and ahs. The comet looks like a nice fuzzy cotton ball. The restoration weekend had 42 cavers in attendance and was lots of fun. We did many hours of worthwhile work in the vicinity of the Snowball Dining Room, and inside the Violet City entrance. We took a great stroll down the perfectly dissolved phreatic Marion Ave. Marion Ave has many old signatures, some dating back to 1841. The acoustics were intense close to the elevator shaft. A highlight was a banquet at the Mammoth Cave Hotel. Roger Brucker spoke on the history of exploration. Gary Berdeaux took portrait shots before the banquet. Many thanks to Rick Olson, Roy Vanhoozer and MCNP for the caving weekend. Re: [Texascavers] Comet Warning
At 8:00 pm (new time) it's about 40 degrees east of north and 20 degrees in elevation. At midnight (even more guessing) it would be about 30 east and 50 elevation. The following links to a moderate resolution star chart that can be printed. http://www.cometchasing.skyhound.com/comets/17P.gif At 8:00 pm, things are situated in the sky so the right end of the chart is up, and the constellation Auriga (mid left) is near the horizon about 40 degrees east of north. At midnight, Auriga will be the most obvious of the constellations on the map, about 40 degrees high in the NE, Casseopeia will be an obvious M shape high in the north, and Perseus will be between them. *When using a star chart, look at things in the sky first and try to identify them on the map second* Looking at the chart first and then trying to find things in the sky is very hard for most people. Don Cooper wrote: Could anyone post what direction and elevation to look for it around midnight? I'm not familiar with Perseus. -WV - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com
