Re: [ot_caving] RE: TexasCaver

2008-01-21 Thread Simon Newton
Hi everyone-

I have been caving since Friday morning. I just logged on and I read
all your messages on the topic. Just to be clear, no decisions are
being made regarding the Texas Caver. This is just an information
gathering exercise on distribution methods and costs. I will follow
up. Probably not this week though.

Simon

PS - I have not been a TSA member for very long, but I think there is
some benefit to what they do

[ot_caving] a Malaysian cave trip

2008-01-21 Thread David Locklear
Here is a Malaysian cave trip invititation for March 16:

Every 3rd Sunday of the month, we conduct a trip to Dark Caves
(located at Batu Caves).

You are invited to join us for this 4-hour adventure session to gain
an understanding of limestone cave formation and be introduced the
type of formations that can be found in the caves such as stalactites,
stalagmites, columns, pillars, etc.

You will also be exposed to the types of fauna that can be found in
the caves such as cave cockroaches, millipedes, and bats on their
contribution to the eco-system. There are approximately 2 km of
passages on several levels. The main attractions of these caves are
their size and formations, and their ecology. Some large passages are
enough for airplanes, and others' are so tight that even crawling
through poses a challenge!

The caves consist of seven major sections, and we are sure you will
have a good time joining us.

It is sort of vague and doesn't give the e-mail or phone number
for the trip organizer Gregg Clemmer.

But here is the e-mail for one of the directors of the project:

[Texascavers] RE: Classroom Caving in China

2008-01-21 Thread Minton, Mark

 Rob Tait posted:

http://www.reuters.com/news/pictures/slideshow?collectionId=1291#a=1

In the caption to that photo Reuters said the cave was "carved out of a
mountain over thousands of years by wind, water and seismic shifts." While seismic
shifts may have contributed to making the rock more easily dissolved, the passage looks
completely phreatic. There are large scallops visible in some of the shots, especially
no. 5. Wind is unlikely to have played any significant role.

I have been in a few caves in the Zhejiang province. If they are big
enough, they are used for something, typically. Frequently temples.
At least near the entrance, where there is light.

[Texascavers] LED Headlights & Flashlight Source

2008-01-21 Thread Robert Tait

I was upgrading some group equipment, and found

http://meritline.com/

was a good source for LED headlights and flashlights.

I bought 10 each 1 watt LED
flashlights
(http://www.meritline.com/1-watt-bright-led-flashlight.html) Which
sell for around $6

and 10 Each 1 Watt LED Head Lamps
(http://www.meritline.com/1w-led-headlamp-with-adjustable-band.html)
The head lamps now sell for $14, I got them on sale on the site for
less than $7.

Service was prompt, and they worked just fine, and shipping was free.

I just looked at the sight and they now have 3 Watt Luxion
flashlights for $32, and 7 Watt Luxion Flashlights for $52.

They have lots of other consumer electronics on the site as well.

As ever, my advice is free, and worth as much..

[ot_caving] health food questions

2008-01-21 Thread David Locklear
I need some advice from the health food experts out there.

I need to start eating healthier.

Do any of you have any experience with drinking
Currant Juice? It is $ 4 for 16 ounces at Kroger.

Does anybody have any personal experiences with some
of the things that are being put in energy drinks, like: Taurine,
or Ginseng, or Ginkgo Bilboa, or guarana, etc?I don't
drink them, and feel that they have too many unknown
side-effects.

Does everybody agree that having a small glass of red wine
in the evenings is very healthy? Is grape juice just as
healthy?

What about taking vitamins? Does it really do any good
if you are eating 3 normal meals a day?

I am drinking a whole lot of High Fructose Corn Syrup. I am
certain I need to stop this. But it is in so many beverages.
Any suggestions?

I need to kick the soft drink habit. But I haven't had any success.
Any suggestions? My goal is to drink more home-brewed decaffeinated
tea.

Are fruit jelly's really healthy?

Any other comments?
