[Texascavers] caves near the planet Saturn
This is sort of cave related: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/science/space/5625932/Salt-water-caverns-may-be-beneath-surface-of-Saturn-moon.html Their theory is that gigantic caves are on Enceladus and that these caves are filled with salt water, and that aquatic troglobitic microbes could exist in such an environment. Note they propose a description of these caves as: "misty ice caverns floored with pools and channels of salty water." I guess you would need alpine caving techniques in a cave like that ?? - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

Re: [Texascavers] ICS Driver Volunteers II
I am just curious about what liability the volunteer faces when volunteering only to drive a rental vehicle from point A to B ? Are they legally responsible for the van in any way? What if they wreck? What if they are at fault ? What if another driver wrecks ? What if the van gets stolen ? What if the van gets pulled over by the police and one of the passengers says something to arise suspicion leading to the van being impounded ? Did I leave out anything ? - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

[Texascavers] Fwd: 15th ICS – Important caving trip news!
Forwarded by Mixon: Begin forwarded message: Dear Friends, In two weeks, many of you will be arriving at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, to register for the 15th International Congress of Speleology (ICS), which will begin on Sunday, 19 July 2009. Some of you will come looking for what caving trips are available. Last week I announced caving trip information on the ICS website at http://www.ics2009.us/cavetrips.html . This message provides some additional information and an update. Some of you have asked if open caving will be possible during the ICS, meaning that the ICS announced a cave is available and people can plan their own trips. Unfortunately, the answer is “no.” Such caving is incredibly difficult to arrange in Texas and become more difficult every year. During the 1994 NSS Convention in Brackettville, we had no such trips that I recall. Trips were led by Texas cavers, and relied on an abundance of private vehicles to get everyone to the caves. This year, when many people will arrive from outside of the USA and won’t have private vehicles, it is necessary that the ICS provide transportation. If you want to caving, you are welcome to join the ICS- led trips. If you want to go on a non-ICS trip, you will need to find a Texas caver who can take you, but most will be busy leading ICS trips and organizing other parts of the ICS. On happier news, the ICS financial team has continued to work on the budget. We were not happy with the price of the trips, which were listed as $35/person/trip (they are still listed that way; we have not yet updated the website). However, because we know caving trips are very important, the team has worked very hard and finally found a way to lower the price to $15/person/trip. This covers the cost of the vehicles, fuel, insurance, White Nose Syndrome decontamination supplies, and other small direct costs. The team found other ways to pay for the indirect costs that made the earlier price higher. The ICS is nearly upon us and our Organizing Committee has done a lot of work to prepare, but we are still working as hard as we can to offer you a wonderful experience in Texas. See you very soon, George George Veni, Ph.D. Chairman, 15th International Congress of Speleology Adjunct Secretary, International Union of Speleology Executive Director, U.S. National Cave and Karst Research Institute - More is not necessarily better, but it frequently is. -- You may "reply" to the address this message came from, but for long-term use, save: Personal: bmi...@alumni.uchicago.edu AMCS: edi...@amcs-pubs.org or sa...@amcs-pubs.org - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com
