We were told ropes could not go in before 11 and had to be out by 3 so as not to disturb the birds. However, when we went back at the pre-arranged time the next day, that is when another individual higher up the food chain gave us the very high fee amounts. They did ask us if we had "big or small" cameras and we told them big. Since reading other people's experiences, we have contacted locals in the tourism business asking about this high rate. One individual told us the price was "random and unpredictable". Another was outraged. So based on all of this, we are going back tomorrow with a local to try again. (I am writing this from Xilitla). Will let you know what happens. :-) --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- I took 23 photos around the entrance area of Camp Happy Hollow on Sunday, and posted them to the event's Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/photo_search.php?oid=299417037079&view=user#!/photo_search.php?oid=299417037079&view=all If you are not on Facebook, and want to receive updates, please e-mail me privately. There are 60 acres of forest for the sole use of cavers and cave-divers, for the weekend of May 21, 22, & 23, and it is free camping. The Saturday dinner will be edible and inexpensive. David Locklear caver in Fort Bend County 281-960-0687 --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- This is a review of a product at the TSA auction: Brunton, the company famous for compasses, has been making some of the best LED lanterns, and seems to always be one step ahead of everybody else in this market. They recently upgraded their popular Polaris LED lantern, and created a new model called the XL. It is brighter than the original Polaris, and has nearly twice the burn time on a set of batteries, and has adjustable light settings to save battery power and to make the brightness just the way you need it. It also has the best light pattern of any LED lantern on the market, and would easily replace a propane or gas Coleman mantle burner. http://media.rei.com//media/gg/d0aa5800-764b-48df-a0b3-75bd7ce23563.jpg This lantern, in my opinion, is the latest and greatest on the market. One was for bid this past Saturday night at the TSA auction. A lucky caver got it fresh out the box, with less than 5 minutes of use.And their bid was only $ 25. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying attention, as they were jokingly bidding to send it back to Fort Bend County with me, as many of the bidders were doing for fun. I didn't know who the
[Texascavers] WNS correction, not yet in Kentucky
Last week I posted a message that someone at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service told me that WNS was found in Kentucky. This morning I received a correction. It turns out that someone from USFWS in Kentucky reported WNS in a cave in the Land Between the Lakes area, and it was assumed to be a cave on the Kentucky side of the border when it fact it was Dunbar Cave in Tennessee (where WNS was recently discovered). My apologies for the confusion. Unfortunately, it is probably just a matter of time before it is found in Kentucky. George
[Texascavers] Kentucky WNS related
Here is a bit of history on the border between Kentucky and Tennessee. http://www.tngenweb.org/campbell/hist-bogan/surveyor.html The border is just an imaginary line drawn by some folks over 150 years ago. Bats, birds, viruses, etc do not pay any attention to this line. http://www.gracegalleries.com/images/Ky-TN/KY-TN104.jpg Let's hope that whatever the cause is, that there is a natural barrier to stop the spread.Such as bats not socializing with bats outside their own colony.Fortunately, bats do not migrate cross continent like butterflies or birds. Wrong. All U.S. bat species migrate. [Texascavers] Re: Golondrinas update
So we went back to Golondrinas yesterday. Left Xilitla at 4 am to film the birds coming out. We took along a local "fixer". The same identical people who wanted to charge us crazy rates last time, charged us normal rates this time. Day and night difference with no explanation. Worth noting however, is that last month an accident happened in Huahuas. Due to this, we were told that nobody can drop Golondrinas anymore without a letter of permission from the state board of tourism in Valles (not the SLP one). We ran across a similar situation earlier this week at Sotano del Barro. There again we needed a letter of permission to drop the pit. According to the people (and log book) at Santa Maria de los Cocos, the last drop into Barro was 5 years ago by a group of Mexican University students studying the birds. The last drop by foreign nationals was 10 years ago. Now again, this is what were were told and saw in their log book. This does not mean people didn't go into the pit without local knowledge. As an aside Barro needs a lot of careful rigging due to all the loose and sharp rock. We also found a couple new Sotanos between Xilitla and Jalpan.
