[PBSS] December meeting notes

2010-12-15 Thread J. LaRue Thomas

PBSS Meeting Notes

12-14-10

The meeting was attended by Matt and Alex Ormsby, Kerry Lowery, Bill
Bentley, Tony Abernathy, and Jacqui Thomas.

The meeting opened at 1905, and after a slight continuation of our
admiration of our new patches and our pre-meeting visiting we had the
Treasurer's Report. We had $606.40 before everybody started buying patches
and shirts.

The new patches look great and they are selling for $4.00 apiece.

We have 21 paid members and 11 of those are NSS members.

We caught Kerry up on the events of SWR Winter Tech and the NCKRI building.
At Winter Tech we met the new Cave Tech at Carlsbad Caverns, Jason Walz, and
it looks good for a rock haul in November. Although we know nothing can
happen this soon we came up with the 5th of November as a good date for us.

We also picked March 5th as a good Five Mouth dig date as long as it works
for the landowner. Jacqui will work on an Abyss trip for May. We would very
much like to go to Amazing Maze again-we have new members who have not been
there. Jacqui will contact Peter about getting the key and although we
cannot remember lambing dates we picked January 8th as a possibility.*
Perhaps we can go to Blackstone on the same weekend and Bill will check into
that possibility. We also talked about trying to work out a trip to
Montgomery again and Jacqui will check on that.

We talked about the Forest Service cave closures and a trip Matt and Alex
are taking to the High Guads.

Then we ran out of things to talk about and decided to close at 1955.

Jacqui Thomas, Pres.

*January 8th will not work for a couple of us so we'll check on other
January dates.

[PBSS] Possible Amazing Maze trip

2010-12-15 Thread J. LaRue Thomas

All,
Two of us cannot go caving on January 8th. Before I talk to Peter, will the
weekend of the 22nd work? I am not available for the weekend of the 15th but
if that weekend works best for everybody else I can skip the trip.

Please weigh in (and Walter's computer isn't working yet so he's not getting
emails).

Re: [Texascavers] bats of Yucatan

2010-12-15 Thread David
That Google translation was pretty bad.

Here is what he is trying to say:

I am in Mexico and will soon be going to the Yucatan area for 1 week to help
a conservation association inventory bats. I work in France with bats, and
spent a month recently in Guatemala doing the same.

I am writing to you in hopes that you can put me in contact with others who
are familiar with bat conservation in Yucatan. We will be capturing bats
with nets and listening to the the sounds they make.

It is my hope that we can protect the bats of the Yucatan.

Feel free to send a private e-mail to correct me on any of that.

[Texascavers] bats of Yucatan

2010-12-15 Thread Mixon Bill
The AMCS has gotten a mysterious (distibution list suppressed) message
asking about bats in the Yucatan. It came from raphcolo...@gmail.com
(Raphael Colombo). If anyone can assist...

Buenas tardes,

Cordialamente

Poor Google translation into English:

Currently in Mexico, I'm ready to spend a week in the Yucatan. Working
France on bats and a month back to Guatemala or inventories did
chiroptera on an association to help protect
Biodiversity.

I can contact you, because I seek contacts
person or partnership that could help with inventories,
photos etc in Yucatan (reserve, park, Mayan site.) I own me mist net
of

capture and ultrasound detectors.

Hoping to help the defense of nature and knowledge of
bats in the Yucatan.

[Texascavers] Re: 1,609 meter deep pit found

2010-12-15 Thread Mark Minton
The surface temperature of Titan is reportedly about -290
degrees F, so you're going to need something way better than an
insulated suit. It's going to have to be heated, and that presents a
problem because of the power required. On the other hand, gravity
there is only .14 g, so getting up and down the pit will be less of a
problem than on Earth. I suggest a jet pack of some sort. Light
should be no more an issue than on earth, assuming any light source
could work at such low temperature. Bon voyage! Be sure to send a
trip report to the Texas Caver.

NASA claims to have found a deep pit on a moon of the planet Saturn.

They claim to have an image of it taken by the Cassini spacecraft.

They believe that a mountainous ice structure over 900 meters tall
has a hole in the side of it that is 1,609 meters deep. The believe
that a liquid spews from this hole, or maybe some kind of frozen
dust made of whatever compound the mountain is made of.

They have named this feature Sotra and the area around it as
Sotra Facula.

The moon is Titan.

So what kind of caving gear do you rig the pit with? The rope
would be too stiff at those temperatures, and might break from
being too brittle.

Do you wear a down-insulated suit, or some synthetic insulated
suit?

Do you mount a couple of Stenlights, or a 2 or 3 Scurion 1300's, on
your helmet?

All hypothetical of course as,

the pit is closed until further notice, and cavers are asked
to stay away.A study is being conducted to determine use policies
and decontamination protocols.
