[Texascavers] Be cautious of driving into submerged sinkholes :
DAUPHIN, MANITOBA—A Manitoba couple got the scare of their lives when a large puddle that concealed a sinkhole swallowed their Ford Ranger, completely submerging the truck. The couple say they barely escaped with their lives. Jim McKnight and his wife, Dawn Sealey, said they were headed to a campground when they saw the giant puddle and decided to cross through it. But within seconds the vehicle was sucked down and water was rushing into the cab. McKnight yelled at his wife to roll down her window, which allowed her to grab the family dog and swim for safety. By that point, the water was over the truck’s roof. “We were completely under water before we had a chance to get out,” said Sealey. “It happened so fast. My husband had to swim out and he got trapped under ice. He had to swim under the ice and he was banging his hand, then his head to break through.” McKnight said he thought he was a goner for sure. “I know I came pretty close to that. I got stuck under the ice and I don’t know how, or where I managed to break the ice but I know I was totally gasping for air. I had no breath whatsoever,” McKnight said. The couple made it out without injury, and walked about a quarter of a mile for refuge with strangers in a house. RCMP are investigating and a spokeswoman who confirmed the account said the couple was very lucky to escape. The couple took a local constable to the scene, where the puddle again looked like a puddle. There was no sign of a truck in the hole, although debris floating on the water included a bag of dog food, marshmallows, shampoo and other supplies from the truck. “You couldn’t see the truck but you could tell something had happened there,” McKnight said. “The officer was asking me, ‘Where’s the truck?’ I said, ‘Right in front of you.’ ” A tow truck company tried to get the truck out Tuesday but ice jams from Lake Dauphin have blocked the road and covered the hole.
