[SWR] Submit your entry to the 2013 NSS Symbolic Emblem salon now!
The Symbolic Emblem Salon is a judged exhibition of symbolic emblems (logos, patches, decals, pins, etc.) related to caves or caving. All symbolic emblem designs must be representative of a caving-related or karst-related organization (such as a caving club, grotto, section, or conservancy) or of a caving-related or karst-related event (such as a caving club event, grotto event, section gathering, meeting, conference, or convention). The Salon Chair will decide if a proposed entry fits the description of a symbolic emblem and is accepted for judging. This year there will be two categories, Emblems and Posters. Items that will be accepted in the Emblems category include patches, pins, stickers, mugs, key-chains, coins and other traditional display items for logos. Items that will be accepted in the Posters category include posters, postcards, brochures and other paper media. Items that the Salon Chair determines to not meet the criteria for either of these categories will not be judged, but may be accepted for display in a nearby area. If in doubt, please contact the Salon Chair in advance to discuss your proposed entry. All entries must be mailed to Dave Decker (5117 Fairfax Dr. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87114, USA) to arrive one week prior to the beginning of the convention (29 JULY, 2013). This is to allow time for presentation set up and documentation. Items that arrive after that date, or are delivered at convention will not be accepted for the current year’s competition, but will be automatically entered in the following year’s competition. For each entry, complete and print the entry form or contact Dave to obtain entry forms via post. Entry forms will be available for completion in the display area for items submitted for the following year’s competition. Entries will be considered to have been donated to the NSS unless otherwise specified when submitted. The entry fee is $3.00 for the entrant's first entry and $1.00 for each additional entry. Cash is preferred; checks should be payable to “National Speleological Society.” T-shirt Salon entry fees are separate from the Symbolic Emblem Salon entry fees. All entrants retain copyright and all moral and intellectual rights to their work. Credit will be included with all objects displayed. If you have questions, send e-mail to emblemsa...@caves.org. Re: [Texascavers] TopoMaps app for the iPhone and iPad
Sorry, I don't do FB. James, can you fill me in on this app please? Does it work on IOS6? Does it work on the latest versions of iPads and iPhones? For many years I have used MacGPS Pro on the Mac to apply my track logs and waypoints to a set of USGS maps that come in condensed pict format with each state on a DVD. [http://www.macgpspro.com/] The same author also brought out an app for the iPhone a couple of years ago called iHike. [http://www.ihikegps.com/] iHike can download a similar set of free USGS and USFS maps, but not over 3G or 4G; you have to download the maps over WiFi. But you can still set waypoints and take track logs without the maps, and then load them later when you get back out of the boonies. For the sailors out there with an iPhone or iPad take a look at iSailGPS [http://www.isailgps.com/]. Only with this app you get access to free NOAA marine charts. James, I assume the app of which Julia mentioned may be at [http://topomapsapp.com/index.html]. Apparently they have maps for Canada the UK. What about Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, etc.? Does this app let you take track logs on both the iPad and the iPhone? I know some iPads don't have GPS, but it's hard to tell from the advertising when so many apps claim they use GPS, but it is really only assisted GPS using cell tower triangulation. What sort of accuracy does your app provide? Thanks! - Pete On Dec 26, 2012, at 11:27 AM, Julia Germany wrote: Many thanks to James Jasek for turning me on to the TopoMaps app for the iPhone (read his post on FB, one of the caving sites).
